50 OCTOBER 27, 2016 RIDGEWOOD TIMES WWW.QNS.COM SPORTS Maspeth's Lady Argonauts score pair of volleyball wins over Adams, Beach BY JOSEPH SWIFT EDITORIAL@RIDGEWOODTIMES.COM @JSWIFTSPORTS The Maspeth High School girls varsity volleyball team defeated John Adams High School by a score of 2-0 on Friday, Oct. 14, in Ozone Park. The Lady Argos won the fi rst two matches of the game, 25-13 and 25-17, respectively. In the third match of the game, neither team scored any points. Maspeth’s outside hitter Gabriela Cid had a big game with 17 service points, six aces, 12 digs and three kills. Her contribution to the team helped secure their victory over John Adams. “As a team, we did great,” Cid said aft er the game. “We did a lot of hitting and I feel like our servers were the number one thing that helped us win t he game.” Coach Gerald Matacotta was pleased with his team’s eff ort and execution. “We did very well. We followed our game plan. We were disciplined,” Matacotta said. “We attacked, and kept attacking on the serve as well as the hit. The team had varied attacks, so it’s hard to say what player was the best because we got good off ence out of all our players. We kept the ball in play the whole time so that adds up into a win.” On Friday, Oct. 21, the Lady Argos defeated Beach Channel 2-0 at Marin van Buren High School. Photos by Joseph Swift
