I set my Sunday morning alarm clock to 9am to make sure I’m up to watch the creative, informative and entertaining show. It’s an hour and half of multiple vignettes of powerfully created short stories. This week’s program featured a few minutes story of a family where a stepdad and biological father got to walk their daughter down the aisle after years of emnity. It brought tears to my eyes. There was also a fascinating informative interview with one of the infamous Koch brothers whose billions have infl uenced the political landscape; and a powerful interview with Dr. Phil, who shared why his common-sense, usable information on his show is the secret to his success. “Sunday Morning” also featured a short on my hero, Eleanor Roosevelt, showing an interview from years ago where she was asked, “Why do you work so hard?” I totally related to the answer: “My children are on their own and have their lives. I don’t want them worrying that I’m lonely!” Then there was a feature about a third- generation puppeteer who just won the MacArthur Genius Award and an opportunity to see some of his creations and puppet performances that made my eyes blink to see they were puppets. There was also an interesting interview of Bob Woodward, who just wrote a book, “The Last of the President’s Men,” about President Nixon’s former assistant, Alexander Butterfi eld. He revealed that there were tapes in the Oval Offi ce at a Congressional hearing. His testimony ultimately brought down Nixon. After his tenure, he took home boxes of documents and held them for decades. It was fascinating new information on those tumultuous years. Oh yes. I mustn’t forget the piece on the infamous dancers at the Moulin Rouge and the uproar over Henri Toulouse- Latrec’s poster of a can-can girl that ironically made him world famous after leading a lonely life. Each Sunday Morning program ends with a “Moment in Nature.” This week we got to see, through the eye of the camera, a close-up of a underground massive colorful spooky cavern. A powerful end to a precious time in my week! TV at its best! It was a walk down memory lane when I entered the newly renovated Plaza LaGuardia Hotel at the airport on Ditmars Boulevard. It used to be the Crown Plaza and was my home away from home thanks to its unique human resources manager Dolly DeThomas. She was as devoted to the hotel as if she owned it and all our friends were made to feel welcome. I can still picture 6 foot 4 inch Tony greeting and welcoming me as I entered the marble lobby. He always knew where Dolly could be found because there was a feeling of family about the employees at the hotel. Tony’s still there but, sadly, my Dolly is not. She left the hotel and soon after died from breast cancer, but I always believed it was more from a broken heart leaving her beloved employees at the hotel. She was the Crown’s best public relations person, always promoting and welcoming people to its handsome elegant walls. The same owner, Martin Field and his sons, wisely invested $5 million in a newly decorated lobby, ballroom and stunningly renovated rooms. They even have a suite with an enormous balcony overlooking the Manhattan skyline and the airport. The newly created honeymoon suite has a large living room and bedroom. It would be a fi tting tribute for one of the rooms be named “The Dolly Room!” I know it would make her smile from her perch in heaven.
