Maspeth residents
forced to vacate after
SUV driver crashes
into two-family home

A 42-year-old man was taken into
custody aft er crashing his black Chevy
Suburban into a two-family home on
the corner of 70th Street and Queens
Boulevard in Maspeth early Monday
morning, according to authorities.
Police responded to a calls regarding
the collision at 46-08 70th St. at approximately
1:36 a.m. on Oct. 4.
The driver was taken to Elmhurst
Hospital aft er complaining of pain and
has yet to be charged as an investigation
is pending, according to authorities.
No residents of the two-family home
were injured, but they were displaced
aft er the city’s Department of Buildings
(DOB) inspectors determined the
residence was unsafe.
The inspectors were called to the
scene to examine the structural stability
of the residential building. The DOB
investigators said that a 16-foot-long
section of the front and side walls at the
corner of the fi rst fl oor were knocked
out of place by the collision.
First responders installed emergency
shoring at the corner of the building
to prevent a potential collapse at the
fi rst fl oor, according to a DOB spokesperson.
The building was ultimately
determined to be unsafe for residents.
As a result, DOB issued a vacate order
with relocation assistance for the fi ve
residents through the American Red
Cross.
“We have ordered the building owner
to properly seal the damage section of
the building and install additional shoring
for the second fl oor above,” said DOB
Press Secretary Andrew Rudansky.
“DOB structural engineers will be following
up with the property owners
regarding their plans for shoring and
repairs.”
