REVEREND JOHN ANTHONY
CROWLEY died on Monday, September
18, at the age of 86 following a long
illness. He was the son of Mary Harten
and Edward Crowley. He was raised in
a traditional Irish family in Maspeth
and had six siblings: three brothers
and three sisters.
John graduated from Power Memorial
High School in Manhattan in 1949.
Two years later, he joined the Congregation
of the Missions (Vincentians). He
attended St. Joseph College in Princeton,
NJ; St. Vincent Seminary in Germantown,
PA; and Mary Immaculate Seminary
in North Hampton, PA. He was
ordained a priest on May 27, 1961.
Father Crowley was a missionary in
Panama. Following his return to the
states, he taught the Minor Seminary
in Coral Gables, FL and later in the
Major Seminary in Boynton Beach,
FL. In 1984, he was incorporated
into the newly established Diocese of
Palm Beach. There, he ministered as
associate pastor at St. Juliana Church
in West Palm Beach, FL, then in Vero
Beach, FL, where he was founder and
fi rst pastor of the newly established
parish of St. John of the Cross.
Father Crowley retired to Delray
Beach, FL, then to Lourdes Noreen
McKeen in 2011.
He was the beloved brother of Anne
Houlihan, Sister Mary Rose Crowley
SSND, Margaret Coyle and the late
Joseph Crowley, Walter Crowley and
Kathleen Hook; cherished uncle of
many loving nieces and nephews, and
dear brother-in-law of Eileen Crowley,
Mary Crowley, James Hook and Jim
Coyle.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered
on Monday, September 25, at St.
Mary’s Church, Woodside, followed by
interment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery,
Hawthorne, NY, under the direction of
Papavero Funeral Home, 72-27 Grand
Ave., Maspeth.

VIORA MATEJ of Ridgewood died
on Monday, September 25, at the age
of 87. A native of Nikolinc, Yugoslavia,
she was the wife of the late Tiberiju
Matej and devoted mother of Lucian
Matej. Services were off ered at Morton
Funeral Home/Ridgewood Chapels,
663 Grandview Ave., Ridgewood, by
Reverend Ionut Preda, followed by
entombment at All Faiths Cemetery,
Middle Village.

DOMENICK W. DISTEFANO died
on Friday, September 22, at the age
of 87. He was the beloved husband of
Jo-Ann DiStefano, loving father of Michael
DiStefano and Joseph DiStefano,
father-in-law of Ivone and cherished
grandfather of Joseph, Antonio and
Vita. He was a U.S. Army veteran. A
private cremation was held on Monday,
September 25, at Fresh Pond
Crematory, Middle Village, under the
direction of Papavero Funeral Home,
72-27 Grand Ave., Maspeth.

FLOAREA CALUGAR of Naples, FL,
died on Tuesday, September 19, at the
age of 85. A native of Cegani, Romania,
she was the wife of the late Ioan Calugar.

19, at the age of 57. A native of Brooklyn,
he was the beloved husband of Loretta
Cecio and devoted father of Lisa Vendittelli.

September 15, in Palm Harbor,
FL, at the age of 91. She was the
beloved mother of Evelyn and
Raymond Uliano, John and Maria
Roach, Greg Roach, William and
Rosa Roach and Barry and Karen
Roach. She was also a cherished
grandmother of 16 grandchildren
and great-grandmother of 14
