Here’s what you need to know to prepare for the TACHS exam
If your child wants to attend a Catholic
high school in the Diocese of
Brooklyn and Queens or the Archdiocese
of New York next fall, he/she
needs to start preparing now for the
TACHS exam this November.
Registration is open through Oct.
16 for the Test for Admission into
Catholic High Schools (TACHS). In
Brooklyn and Queens, the test will be
administered on Saturday, Nov. 4.
The TACHS is open to any
eighth-grader in the current school
year who wishes to apply for admission
in the fall of 2018 to Catholic high
schools in the fi ve boroughs. Catholic
high school administrators use the
TACHS scores in the applicant evaluation
process.
The exam itself consists of four
parts, testing a student’s reading
comprehension, writing expression,
mathematical skills and reasoning
abilities. Upon being completed and
graded, the exam scores are sent to
the three Catholic high schools of the
student’s choice.
Parents can register their children
for the test at www.tachsinfo.com;
there is a $63 fee that covers a student
handbook, test materials and score
reporting. Soon after registering,
parents will receive an Admit card
that their child must bring with
them to the designated testing site
on the day of the exam. (Students are
assigned to the nearest test site by
their ZIP code.)
Students should arrive on the test date
by 8:15 a.m.; the exam will begin promptly
at 9 a.m. The test itself is 2 hours long,
with short pauses in between parts.
Students should bring with them two
sharpened #2 pencils with erasers,
their Admit Card and identification
(either a student ID or their library card).
Electronic or battery-operated devices,
including cellphones, calculators and
watches, are not permitted; food, beverages
and scrap paper are also prohibited.
For more information about the test,
