CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOLS
Everything you need to know about TACHS
BY EMMA MILLER
Eighth graders hoping to attend a
Catholic high school in Brooklyn
or Queens next year must take
the Test for Admission into Catholic
High Schools (TACHS) this fall.
Registration for TACHS is open now
and closes on Oct. 15 at 5 p.m. Students
can register online at tachsreg.com
or by calling 1-866-618-2247. The test
costs $63.
Students in the Archdiocese of
New York will take the test on Nov. 2.;
students in the Diocese of Brooklyn/
Queens, Nov. 3. Tests will be administered
at Catholic schools, but students
do not need to take the TACHS at the
school they currently or want to attend.
TACHS tests eighth graders on
reading, writing, math and reasoning
ability. Students may only take this
exam one time.
As long as students register on time,
they should receive their Admit Cards
through their elementary school or
in the mail on Oct. 22 or 23. Parents
should confi rm that all information
on the card is correct.
Students and parents should
then write the names and TACHS
codes for the three high schools
they prefer on their Admit Cards.
Codes can be found in the student
handbook. Parents must sign the
cards to confi rm the students’ choices.
Students need to carefully transfer
the TACHS codes for each school onto
their answer sheet on the day of the test.
High school choices may not be changed
or corrected aft er the test period is over.
Extended test time is available for
students who need it. Parents must fi ll
out a form explaining why extra time
is needed and send it in to the diocese
by Oct. 5. Accommodations for physical
disabilities should be arranged
with the diocese.
Applicant Records for students in
Catholic elementaries will be fi lled
out by their schools. Students in public,
private or non-diocesan schools
need to have their Applicant Records
fi lled out by a parent as well as their
principal or eighth-grade teacher. Applicant
Records include grades from
sixth, seventh and the fi rst quarter of
eighth grade, standardized test scores,
conduct, eff ort and attendance records.
They must be received by choice high
schools by Dec. 14.
Tests are from 9 a.m. to noon, but
eighth graders should arrive no later
than 8:15 a.m. They should not bring
any electronic devices, including
calculators, watches and phones, food
or drink to TACHS. Students need to
bring their Admit Card and No. 2 pencils
with erasers.
