Rules may prevent drone disaster Look, up in the sky — is it a bird? Is it a plane? Is it Superman? No, it’s probably an unmanned drone. In recent weeks, a number of these devices have been seen hovering around Queens, particularly in Howard Beach near John F. Kennedy Airport and in Whitestone, within a stone’s throw of LaGuardia Airport. Pilots heading to and from the airports must already deal with people shining laser pointers into the sky and impairing their vision; the last thing they need is for an unmanned drone to get in their way. Using unmanned drones (also called UAVs) to take bird’s-eye videos of the landscape has become a popular hobby, largely because such devices are rather affordable. A top-of-the-line drone equipped with a high-defi nition camera retails for $680 or less. With the proliferation of drones comes various concerns about public safety and privacy, and they must be addressed. Local City Councilman Paul Vallone’s bill would prohibit drones within fi ve miles of an airport and within a quarter-mile of public locations such as schools or hospitals, and would outlaw their use for surveillance. Manhattan City Councilman Dan Garodnick’s bill would outlaw drone use in New York City entirely, except for the NYPD, which must fi rst obtain a court warrant for such operations. Either bill makes for a good fi rst step toward regulating drone use in New York City. Absent of action from the federal government on this issue, the city must take the initiative to protect residents and travelers alike from the inherent dangers related to this airborne free-for-all. Participate in your democracy Millions of people across America already have their eyes on the 2016 presidential race, as demonstrated by the hooplah over the fi rst Republican party debate on Aug. 6. People watched and tweeted about it from their homes, while one Astoria venue even had a special viewing party that included comedians heckling the contenders on screen. While everyone’s eyes are on an election still more than a year away, they shouldn’t lose focus of this year’s local elections. Of course, this year’s ballots in Queens fi gure to be light: Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown is virtually assured re-election, as he has both Democratic and Republican party support, and there are a handful of special contests for vacant City Council and Assembly seats. Visit the Board of Elections website, www.vote.nyc.ny.us, to fi nd your polling place and learn who’s running. Find out about their platforms and then make an informed decision when you head to the Sept. 10 primary and the Nov. 3 general election. And if you’re not registered to vote, you’d better hurry: Aug. 15 is the deadline to register in time for the primary (the deadline for the general election is Oct. 9). Download a voter application from the Board of Elections website, complete it and mail it out as soon as possible. Every election is important; don’t take your vote for granted!
