The students delivered these gardens to the senior citizens at the Midway Nursing Home. Kossoff, Dasha Falchiere, and Cheryl Masto all assisted the students in moving the buckets. They were given a $1,000 grant from The Pollination Project, an organization that makes daily seed grants and funds projects. Initially, Kossoff wanted to grow the seeds and sell the buckets as a self-sustained business. Instead, they decided to donate them and give the elderly an opportunity to care for the plants. “We want to expose them to different jobs and become more independent,” Kossoff said. All the students participated by first planting the seeds indoors and then transferring the plant to a self watering 5-gallon plastic bucket that was filled with compost also made by the children. The buckets were donated by Fairway and Stop & Shop. Tomatoes, peppers, basil and beans were grown. The students always come to visit this particular nursing home. The last time they came, they sang for the senior citizens. “We want to continue to do this and come back to visit the gardens… we want to make a more plentiful garden,” Kossoff said. She wanted to create a personal connection between the elderly and the special ed students. Since the elderly didn’t have the accessibility to go out and garden anymore, Kossoff wanted to let them have the chance to do so. She wants to expose them to an environment in which they can potentially work at someday. Next year, she wants to do the gardens again.
