Photo courtesy of NYPD M.V. man led L.I. heroin ring, prosecutors say Residents of Middle Village and Ozone Park were among two dozen people arrested on July 26 for their alleged participation in a major narcotics operation based on Long Island. Law enforcement agents in a joint operation conducted by the Nassau and Suffolk police departments and the Long Island Drug Enforcement Administration Task Force also recovered 4 kilos of heroin and fentanyl, a synthetic opioid that is up to 50 times stronger than heroin. One of those arrested was Melquisedec Puello, 30, of Middle Village, who was identified as a leader of the ring. The arrests “deliver a significant setback to one of the major suppliers of fentanyl in the metropolitan area,” Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota said. It is estimated that the network delivered more than 3,000 bags of heroin/fentanyl (around one kilo) per week from New York City to Suffolk and Nassau counties. The probe was sparked by a large increase of drug overdoses of users purchasing pure fentanyl and fentanyllaced heroin on Long Island. Large amounts of the drugs were found at the locations of the overdoses and were wrapped in lotto ticket paper and stamped with either the words “Aleve,” “Brooklyn,” Brooklyn Bridge” or “Clean Up.” Along with the drugs, three handguns, an AK47 assault rifle, a pistol grip shotgun, narcotics parking materials, scales, grinders a money counter, a bulletproof vest and about $20,000 in cash were found on location. Six individuals are wanted in connection with a citywide grand larceny pattern, stealing more than $30,000 from unsuspecting victims over the last month, police said. According to officers, between May 25 and July 18, 58 victims were informed by their respective bank representatives that their credit card numbers were compromised. Authorities said the crooked half dozen used that information to illegally purchase over $30,000 in merchandise from places such as delis, a Petland Discount and even an NYC Department of Transportation (DOT) parking meter, across the East New York and Brownsville sections of Brooklyn. The illegal purchases were made throughout the 100th, 101st, 104th and 105th precincts, police said. Anyone with information in regards to this incident is asked to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 800-577-TIPS (8477) or for Spanish, 888-57-PISTA (74782). The public can also submit their tips by logging onto the Crime Stoppers website, or by texting their tips to 274637 (CRIMES) then enter TIP577. All calls and messages are kept confidential.
