Fastrack Program Affects E, F, M, R The MTA’s Fastrack maintenance and repair program will hit the E, F, M and R lines in western Queens and Manhattan on Monday, July 21, through Friday, July 25, from 10 p.m. until 5 a.m. E train service will be suspended between Roosevelt Avenue and World Trade Center and F trains will not operate between Roosevelt Avenue and 21st Street-Queensbridge. More Disruptions Affect The 7 Line There will be no 7 train service between Times Square-42nd Street and Queensboro Plaza this weekend, from 2 a.m. Saturday, July 19, until 4:30 a.m. Monday, July 21. Service on the 7 line will operate normally between Queensboro Plaza and Main Street-Flushing. As alternate service, Q trains will be extended from 57th Street in Manhattan to Ditmars Boulevard in Astoria on Saturday from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m.F or service to and from Queens and Manhattan, transfer to the N or Q train at Queensboro Plaza or Times Square-42nd Street or the E or F train at 74th Street. Free shuttle buses will replace 7 train service in Long Island City between Queensboro Plaza and Vernon Boulevard-Jackson Avenue. These buses will stop at Queens Plaza for ADA-access to the E train. The shuttle buses will stop as follows: • Queensboro Plaza—on Queens Plaza South at 27th Street; -SEE TRANSIT ON PG. 54- TRAFFIC NEWS and Updates New York City Department Of Transportation Because of ongoing construction work at several locations throughout Queens and Brooklyn, the city DOT has announced numerous street closures in local neighborhoods for the upcoming week. The announced diversions are current as of Wednesday, July 16, and weather permitting. The DOT may shut down other roads should the need for emergency repairs arise. Streets and highways that are affected by closures during this week include the following: Resurfacing In F.H., Elm., Woodhaven Weather permitting, DOT crews will conduct resurfacing along the following streets: • 74th Place between 85th Road and 90th Avenue in Woodhaven for paving on Thursday, July 17; • 87th Avenue between Elderts Lane and 75th Street in Woodhaven for paving on Thursday, July 17; • 87th Road between Elderts Lane and 75th Street in Woodhaven for paving on Thursday, July 17; • 90th Avenue between 75th Street and Elderts Lane in Woodhaven for paving on Friday, July 18; • Broadway between Roosevelt and Baxter avenues in Elmhurst for nighttime paving on Thursday, July 17, and Friday, July 18; • Loubet Street between Selfridge Street and 71st Avenue in Forest Hills for paving on Thursday, July 17, and Friday, July 18; • Manse Street between 71st Avenue and Selfridge Street in Forest Hills for paving on Friday, July 18; • Metropolitan Avenue between Union Turnpike and Lefferts Boulevard in Kew Gardens for milling on Friday, July 18; and • Rockaway Boulevard between Lefferts Boulevard and Van Wyck Expressway in South Ozone Park for nighttime milling on Thursday, July 17, and Friday, July 18. Parking is prohibited on these streets during work hours; all vehicles found parked will be towed away at the owner’s expense. Lane Closures On Van Wyck Expwy. One of three lanes in each direction of the Van Wyck Expressway between Jewel Avenue and Union Turnpike may be closed on Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. due to construction work related to the Kew Gardens rehabilitation project. Additionally, up to two lanes in either direction of the expressway in the same section may be closed on overnights from 1 to 5 a.m. Kew Gdns. Project Affects Union Tpke. Tube Work Cuts LIC Off G Line Five-Week Closure Related To Sandy Repairs by Robert Pozarycki The G train will be exclusively Brooklyn’s for five straight weeks beginning next Friday, July 25, as the MTA will close a portion of the line between Long Island City and Greenpoint to repair tunnel damage inflicted during Hurricane Sandy. Sandy Recovery Work program, the closure will allow crews to continue to rebuild the Greenpoint Tube, which runs below the Newtown Creek between Long Island City and Greenpoint and was significantly flooded by Hurricane Sandy’s storm surge in October 2012. Approximately 3 million gallons of salt water poured through the Service will be suspended on the G line between its northern terminus—Court Square—and Nassau Avenue around-the-clock beginning at 10:30 p.m. on July 25 and continuing through 5 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2. The train will continue to operate between Nassau Avenue and Church Avenue. Part of the MTA’s Fix and Fortify -SEE G TRAIN ON PG. 54- Talks between the MTA and the various LIRR unions broke down on Monday, July 14, and union representatives indicated they were ready to strike at 12:01 a.m. Sunday morning. As the Times Newsweekly went to press Wednesday afternoon, July 16, no break in the impasse appeared imminent. If the LIRR’s more than 5,000 unionized workers are on the picket line come Monday morning, July 21, Queens and Brooklyn commuters will find themselves sharing in the commuter pain with tens of thousands from Nassau and Suffolk counties. The MTA announced a limited contingency plan in which shuttle buses would transport commuters to and from subway stops in Queens.
