City Council Member Elizabeth Crowley and the Parks Department hosted the event, during which project manager Ricardo Hinkl provided details of transforming the playground into a modern play area reflecting the park’s natural beauty. Located at 43-06 Greenpoint Ave., the branch will be shut down at the close of business this Saturday, June 21 and remain shut through mid-August while crews install a new roof. The gathering took place at the cemetery’s Slocum memorial, which pays tribute to the more than 1,100 passengers who died when the pleasure boat Slocum caught fire while cruising the East River in 1904.
