TIMES, THURSDAY, MAY 29, 2014 • 24 LIC Street Fair A Big Hit Assemblywoman Catherine Nolan stopped by the Long Island City BID’s Long Island City Springs street fair on Vernon Boulevard Saturday, May 17. This first ever Long Island City community block party brought together all the wonderful businesses, artist groups and community groups that Long Island City has to offer. The party went from 1 to 6 p.m. on Vernon Boulevard between 46th and 50th avenues. Nolan is pictured with Sheila Lewandowski, executive director, The Chocolate Factory and representatives from the Long Island City YMCA. Seniors Celebrate Veterans More than 200 seniors attended a Memorial Day ceremony at the Peter Cardella Senior Center in Ridgewood on Thursday, May 22. Pictured are veterans from WWII, Korea, and Vietnam Wars with Barbara Toscano the center's executive director. Thos participating were given American flags to lay on the graves of the fallen in a symbolic gesture, as amazing grace was played in the background. LGBTQ Pride To Show At Many Weekend Events Kicks Off Tonight At LIC Party Queens Pride will celebrate the 22nd Pride Parade and Festival this Sunday, June 1, in Jackson Heights with a host of activities to promote pride among and for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer/questioning (LGBTQ) community of Queens and beyond. The theme, “A World of Pride,” celebrates the accomplishments of our global LGBT community in Queens while continuing the focus on the struggles that still need to be addressed in terms of human rights and the dignity of all persons worldwide. This year, the parade’s Grand Marshals will include the New York City Council’s LGBT Caucus, comprised of Council Members Daniel Dromm, Corey Johnson, Rosie Mendez, Carlos Menchaca, Richie Torres and Jimmy Van Brammer. This is an unprecedented representation of New York City citizens by the LGBT community. Also being honored is Melissa Sklarz, known for her leadership as president of the Stonewall Democrats and as a transgender member of our community, and Chutney Pride for their organization and outreach to Caribbean members of the LGBT community. “Our Grand Marshals reflect how far we have come to be integral in our government, community and our visibility” says Chris Calvert, Co-Chair, Queens Pride. The parade will kick-off at noon at 84th Street and 37th Avenue, ending at 75th Street. Marcus Woolen and Candy Samples will host a reviewing stand in front of the Jackson Heights Post Office, which is where the Queenie Awards are judged. The awards honor the ingenuity and enthusiasm of groups in their demonstration of LGBTQ pride and the theme of this year’s event. The Festival begins at noon with nearly 100 vendors along -SEE PRIDE ON PG. 59- GWDC Holds Spring Gala June 6 Woodhaven Group To Hand Out Honors The Greater Woodhaven Development Corporation (GWDC) will honor community leaders at its 35th anniversary dinner/dance next Friday night, June 6. Themed “Spring is Here!”, the gala will begin at 7:30 p.m. at Woodhaven Manor Caterers, located at 96-01 Jamaica Ave. As announced by GWDC Executive Director Maria Thomson, the program includes live music and a buffet; ladies are encouraged to wear warm spring colors for the occasion. During the event, the GWDC will present its Man of the Year award to Matthew Xenakis, president of the Woodhaven Business Improvement District; Rep. Nydia Velázquez will receive the GWDC’s Woman of the Year award. Deputy Inspector Henry Sautner, commanding officer of the 102nd Precinct, will also be presented with the GWDC’s “Award of Distinction,” while George Smith will be recognized with the “Honorary Woodhavenite Award.” Finally, State Sen. Paying Tribute To Queens Vets Queens Borough President Melinda Katz stood for the playing of Taps during the Memorial Day ceremony she hosted on Thursday, May 22, in the Veterans Memorial Gardens of Queens, located in front of Queens Borough Hall in Kew Gardens. Joining her were State Sen’s. Joseph Addabbo Jr. (l.) and James Sanders Jr. The color guard was from the JROTC program of Francis Lewis High School in Fresh Meadows. During the ceremony, Katz participated in the laying of a wreath in memory of the nation’s war dead and spoke about the importance of honoring everyone who serves, or has served in the U.S. Armed Forces.
