Ridgewood Dems get a community update The Ridgewood Democratic Club welcomed Community Board 5 District Manager Gary Giordano and Ted Renz, executive director of the Myrtle Avenue Business Improvement District, to its May 15 meeting for updates on the many issues affecting both the local community board and the Myrtle Avenue area. CERT salutes firefighters in Corona, Elmhurst Members of the Community Board 4 Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) joined the families of the Coalition of United Residents for a Safer Community for visits to the headquarters of Engine Company 289/Ladder Company 138 in Corona and Engine Company 287/Ladder Company 136/Battalion 46 in Elmhurst. The visitors came during the Fire Department’s citywide open house on May 2 honoring the department’s 150th anniversary. The companies provided children with toy helmets and fire safety coloring books. Firefighters also allowed visitors to inspect the equipment and trucks. Raising big cash for autistic kids The NYFAC Foundation’s second annual Wine Tasting event was a huge success once again, raising over $7,000 — all of which will go toward “bettering the lives of those with autism.” The evening of food and drink took place at Matteo’s in Howard Beach, where more than 100 people gathered as sommeliers and sampled some of the best wines, thanks to the generosity of Jack LaSala of Empire Merchants. Hundreds get free trees in Forest Hills The May 17 Forest Hills tree giveaway MacDonald Park was a huge success, where 205 trees were provided to adopters and volunteers from the Four Borough Neighborhood Preservation Alliance, New York Restoration Project, Rego-Forest Preservation Council and other groups. Among the types of trees donated were American elms, red buckeyes, dawn redwoods and yellowwoods, with a goal of beautifying the area and contributing to a sustainable environment. More than 1,250 trees have been donated in the last seven tree giveaways in Forest Hills.
