In the bottom photo, the World’s Fair Orchestra performs before the symbol of the 1964-65 World’s Fair, the Unisphere. The 75th anniversary of the 1939 fair and the 50th anniversary of the 1964 fair will be celebrated at Flushing Meadows this Sunday, May 18, with a festival featuring music from the Queens Symphony Orchestra and a fireworks extravaganza. crafts and games and a visit by Mr. Met, the New York Mets’ beloved mascot. The Flushing Meadows Carousel is also offering 50 cent rides. Guests of all ages will get to sample some international flavors provided by food trucks and vendors set up around the park, including Belgian waffles, a prized concession among visitors to the 1964-65 fair. Throughout the festival, attendees will get to enjoy an array of musical acts on a stage set up near the New York State Pavilion. The acts include Japanese drummers; Mariachi Flor de Toloache, the only all-female mariachi band in the city; and The Liverpool Shuffle, a Beatles tribute band performing classic songs from 1964. But the main act will take the stage at 7 p.m., when the Queens Symphony Orchestra (QSO)—under the baton of music director and conductor Constantine Kitsopoulos—performs its musical tribute to the city’s World’s Fairs. Leading the orchestra’s performance is “National,” the fifth movement of the “World’s Fair Suite” composed by Ferde Grofe. The World’s Fair Symphony Orchestra performed the suite on the opening day of the 1964 fair. The orchestra will also perform a host of American classics including the “Armed Forces Salute,” “Stars and Stripes Forever” and a medley of Irving Berlin’s patriotic compositions. The program also includes theater classics from the shows West Side Story, Oklahoma and Hello, Dolly. “The New York World’s Fairs of 1939 and 1964 put Queens on the map,” Kitsopoulos said. “We at QSO are excited to participate in a celebration of the continuing legacy of those two monumental international exhibitions.” Part of the orchestra’s program will accompany a 15 minute fireworks display sometime after sunset that will draw the day’s festivities to a close. MacKay stated the fireworks will illuminate the night sky directly above the New York State Pavilion, the futuristic needle-shaped towers near the Long Island Expressway. World’s Fair fun won’t be limited to Flushing Meadows Park this Sunday, as various commemorations of the fair are scheduled for other historic venues in Queens. One of them is the Louis Armstrong Museum in Corona, which is offering free admission all day. MacKay noted Armstrong—the famed jazz trumpetist and Corona resident—performed at the 1964 fair and had a day dedicated in his honor. He praised the 104COP officers for the oversight of the Good Friday events in April, saying they did an “outstanding” job directing traffic and ensuring safety. Other news Capt. Timothy Brown, the 104th Precinct executive officer, provided 104COP members with precinct maps to give them a better understanding of its section layout. He thanked the group for their work especially in the missing persons department. Brown said, “You guys can do your job without me, I can’t do my job without you.” He went on to claim the 104COP is like no other in the city. The executive officer encouraged all volunteers to be a part of his daily roll call at the precinct to get 104COP even more involved and introduced to his staff. Also, Brown asked for donations of juice boxes and candy from the room in an effort to ease tensions and shyness when kids are touring the precinct. Donations can be delivered to the 104th Precinct at 64-02 Catalpa Ave. in Ridgewood. The volunteer patrol will be voting in June on several positions including president, first vice president, second vice president, treasurer, sergeant-at-arms, secretary, and directors. Nominees must be an active 104COP member. The next 104th Precinct Civilian Observation Patrol meeting is scheduled to take place on Thursday, June 19, at 8 p.m. at St. Pancras Pfeifer Hall, located at the corner of Myrtle Avenue and 80th Street in Glendale. For more information, visit www.104cop.org or call 1-718- 497-1500. Street stations, the MTA noted, no service disruptions are scheduled for the other three stations in the renewal project: 80th Street, Rockaway Boulevard and 111th Street. The Queens-bound platforms at 88th Street and 104th Street will remain shut through Aug. 18. During this period, customers on Far Rockaway-bound or Ozone Parkbound A trains seeking to stop at 88th Street would need to transfer to a Manhattan-bound A train at Rockaway Boulevard. For service to the 104th Street station, riders on Ozone Park-bound A trains should transfer to a Manhattan-bound A train at 111th Street. Once repairs on the Queens side are finished, the MTA will conduct similar repairs to the Manhattanbound platforms at 88th Street and 104th Street requiring round-theclock closures on both stops, scheduled to begin in September. As part of a patient’s medical history, veteran status can provide critical information to physicians that could inform treatment recommendations, similar to knowing whether a patient has a family history of certain conditions. It could help a physician connect the dots between symptoms that seemed unrelated before getting additional information about military service.” “Knowing if a patient served in the armed forces provides health care providers with a better understanding of how to treat them and alerts physicians to be on the lookout for specific conditions,” said Vietnam Veterans of America President John Rowan. “I was proud to work with Congressman Crowley on developing a commonsense measure that will have a profound impact on the health of veterans and I thank him for his commitment to those who have sacrificed so much for our country.” The legislation would add veteran status under the patient information required by Medicare’s Electronic Health Record program that incentivizes all doctors to use electronic health records to manage health information. Adequately identifying patients who are veterans sets the stage for a more effective course of treatment and can help improve coordination of services, making it easier for patients in private practice to be referred to veteran assistance programs and other critical resources. Health providers have indicated that knowing a patient is a veteran can help them address and approach that patient in a way that allows for a better relationship and to more accurately assess their needs. The bill also instructs the Department of Health and Human Services to look for additional ways to improve care and treatment of veterans who see private physicians. Additionally, a grant program would be established to support organizations that educate providers on veteran health needs and on common health concerns among veteran populations. -CONTINUED FROM PG. 12- HAVE YOU READ A BOOK WITH YOUR CHILD TODAY?
