TIMES, THURSDAY, MAY 15, 2014 • 12 WILLS INDICTED FOR $$$ SCHEME Say He Took Election Funds For Himself by Robert Pozarycki City Council Member Ruben Wills was the latest lawmaker to wear handcuffs last Wednesday, May 7, after being indicted for allegedly embezzling campaign and charitable funds for his own personal use. The 42-year-old lawmaker proclaimed his innocence to reporters and refused to resign following his arraignment last Wednesday afternoon at Queens Criminal Court in Kew Gardens. Nonetheless, he reportedly stepped down as chair of the City Council subcommittee on drug abuse and was stripped of the authority to apply for discretionary funds for his district, which includes parts of Richmond Hill, South Richmond Hill and South Ozone Park. Joe Crowley pushed Congress to enact a bill that would include military service history in patient records. Crowley, vice chair of the Democratic Caucus, was joined by members of Vietnam Veterans of America and Veterans of Foreign Wars in Woodside on Tuesday, May 13, to announce the Serving America’s Veterans Effectively Act (or SAVE Act), legislation that will prompt doctors to ask their patients if (photo: Chris Bishop) they have served in the armed forces. Including veteran status in a patient record reminds doctors to screen for and treat conditions that may be more prevalent in veterans such as, ALS, hepatitis, traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress disorder. -SEE SAVE ON PG. 53- Christ The King Students Excel At State Mathematics League Christ the King’s math team recently competed in the New York State Mathematics League and tied for second place overall. More than 30 members competed over the course of the school year. CK’s math team consistently placed in the top two throughout the six contests, which were conducted from October 2013 to March 2014. The New York State Mathematics League is comprised of teams from over 200 high schools, with over 4,000 participants. The League includes public, specialized, private and parochial high schools. Last year, the CK math team was the top school in the state. Individually, out of thirteen students who tied for first place, four were Christ the King students. Among those pictured are Christ the King Principal Peter Mannarino and former State Sen. Serphin Maltese, chair of the school’s board of trustees.
