TIMES, THURSDAY, APRIL 24, 2014 • 2 NO BOOZE WITH MUSIC by Robert Pozarycki Following an investigation, a friend of a Bushwick man shot dead near Maria Hernandez Park earlier this month was charged last Wednesday, Apr. 16, with committing the homicide, authorities reported. Police identified the suspect as 22-year-old Christopher Ortiz of Suydam Street, who is accused of the Apr. 6 murder of 29-year-old Ivan Martinez of Troutman Street. According to sources familiar with the investigation, Ortiz allegedly pulled a gun on Martinez and fatally shot him during an apparent dispute near the suspect’s Suydam Street home in the vicinity of Knickerbocker Avenue at about 5:55 p.m. on Apr. 6. The cause of the argument was not disclosed by police. Law enforcement sources said Ortiz and Martinez were seen -SEE ARREST ON PG. 26- ©Times Newsweekly - 2014 - WYCKOFF concerts on May 8 and 9. Chairperson Dennis Rosen also delayed until next month a decision on a granting a full-fledged liquor license to the facility seeking to accommodate thousands at various events. Rosen gave an attorney representing the Knockdown Center, located at 52-19 Flushing Ave., until the close of business next Tuesday, Apr. 29, to provide the SLA with additional information about security and transportation accommodations at the facility. The information, combined with comments received by the SLA at Tuesday’s meeting, will factor into the authority’s final decision, which is scheduled to be made at its May 6 board meeting. A former glass factory, the Knockdown Center has held in recent months various events from performance art to live concerts. Its owners—DMI Inc., as noted on the SLA application, and principal owner David Sklar—is seeking a cabaret liquor license to serve alcoholic beverages with live and recorded music at its various events. Sherman Knights of Columbus Post in Glendale held a blood drive on Good Friday, Apr. 18. As noted, over 30 donors came to the group’s Myrtle Avenue post to give the gift of life.
