Maspeth High School lacrosse
opens season with wins
One week after a snowstorm
postponed the fi rst game of the
season for both the boys and
girls lacrosse teams at Maspeth High
School, both teams got their fi rst win
of the season on March 28.
The boys varsity team traveled to
Brooklyn to face off against Eagle
Academy for Young Men II and got the
win aft er a low-scoring game. The Argonauts
were led by David Lema’s two
goals and one assist, and goal keeper
Joseph Seminatore made 12 saves to
seal the win, 4-2.
The Lady Argonauts took on A.
Philip Randolph High School at
Randall’s Island, and their game was
much more high-scoring. Maspeth
won by a score of 17-13 behind Oliwia
Kowalska’s fi ve goals and Zulecka
Fajardo’s four goals.
Both teams will try to stay undefeated
when they play their next games on
April 9.
Flushing hosts big arm wrestling
tournament this month
The New York Arm Wrestling Association
(NYAWA) announced
that the 40th Annual Anniversary
of the Empire State Tournament
of Champions will be held on Sunday,
April 22, in Flushing.
More than 100 men and women will
compete for $3,000 in cash and prizes,
and the chance to be crowned “New
York State’s Strongest Arm.” There are
divisions in amateur, pros, masters,
45+, 55+ and women’s categories.

MVPs – which are the overall male
right and left-hand winners—will
receive $200 cash prizes. The day’s
strongest women will receive $50 for
right and left -handed and all male and
female MVPs will receive a special
award. First, second and third place
winners in all categories will receive
custom awards and offi cially stamped
certifi cates.

Tournament of Champions is New
York City’s oldest and most prestigious
sought-aft er title,” said Gene
Camp, founder and president of the
New York Arm Wrestling Association
(NYAWA). The Empire State
Tournament of Championships
(New York State Arm Wrestling
Championships) is very exciting to
watch because it is loaded with top
talent locally, from all over the tristate
area and far beyond.”
Some of the city’s best arm wrestlers
are expected to compete, among them,
the winners of the prestigious 2017
NYC Big Apple Grapple International
and previous Empire State Champions
will return to defend their titles.
Contestants and teams are expected to
compete both locally from the fi ve NYC
Boroughs and Long Island and from as
far away as Russia, Brazil and Turkey.
The grappling gets underway at
1 p.m. on April 22 at Cheap Shots
Sports Bar, located at 149-05 Union
Tpke. Spectator admission is $5. Competition
is open to the public and has
no residency requirements. Entrance
fees are $25 for amateurs, masters +43
and +55 years, $35 for pros and $15 for
all women. Contestants should weighin
and register between 9:30 a.m. and
12:50 p.m. for the 1 p.m. start.
