This was the fi fth year that the Garda, the Irish police force, battled the FDNY for the Transatlantic Championship belt, which the Irish laid claim to at last year’s event in Macroom, Ireland. With eight bouts scheduled for the Saturday, March 26 event at Webster Hall, fans were in for an exciting night of boxing. “I haven’t fought since 2014, but I am looking forward to getting back in the ring,” said Daniel Oleaga from Engine 258 in Long Island City who competed at the event. “I took some time off to take care of family stuff, but now I’m back.” In the seventh match of the night, David Cahil, a policeman in Dublin, Ireland, was scheduled to take on Jimmy Guidice of the FDNY in a rematch of their contest last year. “I’m looking forward to reacquainting our little dance routine,” Cahil said. “I love fi ghting him because you don’t have to look for him, he’s totally honest. There’s no reverse gear with him; I don’t do reverse either, so it will be interesting. We will show these fellas how two old guys can still go at it.” But, the boxers were also competing for a bigger cause, raising money for Building Homes for Heroes. The Building Homes for Heroes organization builds mortgage-free, handicap-accessible homes for veterans returning from combat with severe injuries. According to Booby McGuire, coach of the FDNY Bravest Boxing Team, more than 93 percent of the monies donated to Building Homes for Heroes goes directly into constructing these homes. “It means a lot to both myself and the team members to work with Building Homes for Heroes,” McG uire said. “I come from a family where my dad was a WWII veteran and both my brothers were veterans during the Vietnam era, so I know the sacrifi ces that are made by members of our military. We also have members of our team that are veterans themselves, or have family members who currently serve or have served our country. I think donating money to them is like giving back just a little bit for all the freedom we enjoy.” At the fi ght, there were close contests up and down the card, but the Irish took most of the bouts. Oleaga won the fi nal fi ght for the FDNY at 1:36 of the second round when the referee stopped the bout after a second standing eight count. The event raised $15,000 for Building Homes for Heroes, and the 50/50 raffl e at Webster Hall garnered another $1,000 for the organization. Blowout victories propel St. John’s baseball over the .500 mark BY COURTNEY OBENG editorial@ridgewoodtimes St. John’s blew out LaSalle 15-0 game one and 9-2 game two last week, bringing their record to 11-9-1. Their overwhelming game one victory was thanks in part to Joe Nellis, a left-handed pitcher who led a threehit shutout and drove in fi ve runs. Nellis racked up eight strikeouts, a career high, and allowed two hits. Nellis retired 11 batters straights before giving up his fi rst hit to LaSalle in the fi fth inning. Multiple players held multiple RBI during game one. Mark Venice, OF, held with four RBI. Both Michael Donadio, OF, and Jamie Galazin, OF/RHP, added three RBI. And Troy Dixon and Gui Gingras had two RBI. While St. John’s dominated game one, La Salle had an early lead during game two. After scoring twice in the fi rst inning, St. Johns managed to tie, thanks to Donadio, Anthony Fava and Galazin. But an error allowed St. John’s to take a 3-2 lead in the forth. St. John’s added two runs in the fi fth, one in the sixth and three in the bottom of the eighth.
