Brooklyn man pays for attack on transgender woman in Bushwick A judge ordered a Brooklyn man to serve 20 years behind bars for assaulting and seriously injuring a transgender woman on a Bushwick street in October 2014, prosecutors announced. Mashawn Sonds, 26, of Brownsville, was convicted on Dec. 18, 2015, of first-degree assault as a hate crime for striking the 29-year-old victim in the head with a 2-by-4 piece of Plexiglas, causing severe head injuries. “Hate led to the defendant’s conviction,” Brooklyn District Attorney Ken Thompson said in a statement announcing the sentencing on Jan. 13. “Justice led to his sentence.” According to trial testimony, on Oct. 12, 2014, at approximately 11:20 p.m., on Bushwick Avenue, near Halsey Street, Sonds and a group of others approached the woman, who was walking with a gay male friend. One of group members began yelling anti-gay slurs at the pair. Sonds then picked up a piece of Plexiglas and swung it at the woman, according to the investigation. As she tried to get away, police said, Sonds threw the Plexiglas and struck the woman in the head, causing her to be knocked unconscious and begin seizing. The woman suffered profuse bleeding from the back of her head and a traumatic brain injury. She underwent surgery to her skull and will likely suffer permanent injuries, Thompson said. This was the first trial conviction secured by the DA’s Hate Crimes Unit, which was created last year and is part of the District Attorney’s Civil Rights Bureau. 102nd Precinct Kew Gardens, Ozone Park, Richmond Hill, Woodhaven Knife-wielding man tried to sexually assault Woodhaven woman Police are searching for a suspect who tried to sexually assault a woman at knifepoint in Woodhaven last week.
