Pedestrian struck and
killed by unlicensed
driver in Middle Village
A 57-year-old man was struck and killed by an
allegedly unlicensed driver in Middle Village on the
evening of Thursday, Jan. 13, according to the NYPD.
The victim was walking in the vicinity of
Metropolitan Avenue and Rentar Plaza around 7:45
p.m. when he was hit by a 2007 Cadillac Escalade,
according to police.
Police from the 104th Precinct in Ridgewood
responded to a 911 call of a motor vehicle collision
involving a pedestrian and found the victim
lying in the roadway with body trauma, police
said.
EMS responded and transported the man in
critical condition to Elmhurst Hospital Center, where
he was pronounced dead, police said.
Joseph Capella, 46, of 75th Street in Middle Village
remained at the scene and was subsequently taken
into custody and charged with driving without a
license, according to the NYPD.
The identity of the victim is pending family
notifi cation. The investigation by the NYPD
Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad is
ongoing.

Police looking for e-bike
riding gunman who
opened fi re on a
Howard Beach
speed camera
Police from the 106th Precinct in Ozone Park
are looking for a suspect who opened fi re on a
Department of Transportation speed camera on
Friday, Jan. 7.
The man was riding an e-bike through the snow
on a quiet residential street in Howard Beach around
3:18 a.m. when he came to a stop at the intersection of
86th Street and 158th Street and pulled out a handgun,
police said.
The suspect was captured on surveillance video
as he fi red at the speed camera installation several
times, striking it several times, police said.
There were no injuries reported as a result of the
shooting and there have been no arrests, according
to the NYPD. The investigation is ongoing.
