He attended P.S. 42 and Beach Channel High School. He went on to study at Mercyhurst College in Pennsylvania. He is currently married to his wife of 23 years, Eileen McManus, with three sons, Philip, James and Gerard. P R O F E S S I O N A L BACKGROUND McManus joined the Ancient Order of Hibernians Myles James McPartland Division 21 in Rockaway beach in 1986. He joined the New York City Police Department in 1990 where he served for 25 years. He founded the Queens Public Transit Committee in 2013 with the goal of educating, star OF queens motivating and organizing people to advocate for faster and safer transportation. McManus is working to unite the commuters of the NYC area, not excluding any forms of transportation in his fi ght to end gridlock, pollution caused by gridlock and accidents. “We are all commuters and we are all responsible for each other’s safety. We should not divide commuters by the way we get around.” He believes that we should not take away from one means of transportation to improve another At the top of his to-do list is fi ghting to reopen the Queensrail, which is the old Rockaway Beach rail line that has been closed for years. He believes along with its reopening, eliminating empty bus and bike lanes, and creating more citywide ferry service and bus trails, we can eliminate overcrowded and unreliable roadways to create better access to jobs and schools. “Select Bus Service, Vision Zero and QueensWay are taking away our time, freedom, safety and prosperity with deception and over regulations.” MOTIVATION TO CONTRIBUTE TO COMMUNITY McManus was impacted greatly by the destruction Hurricane Sandy caused in 2012 and the government’s failure to respond to the community’s request for increased beach protection prior to the storm. This made him realize that it is the community’s responsibility to keep the government honest and accountable. “After Hurricane Sandy hit, we were crushed. I believe the city of NY failed us. If we had the beach protection we had now, lives and houses could have been saved.” McManus has always been inclined to be involved in his community, but these events motivated him to help organize people for change. BIGGEST CHALLENGE McManus sees his biggest challenge as getting people to be involved in the process of calling for change. He thinks it’s a matter of knowing who’s out there so we can make a difference in our own and our neighbors’ lives. He believes our quality of life declines when there is no debate and dialogue from the people. GREATEST ACHIEVEMENT McManus’s greatest achievement is being married for 23 years and raising three sons. That is the legacy he wants to leave behind. He is also proud of the work his committee has accomplished in improving and increasing transportation options. His group is currently an advocate for the Freedom Ticket, which will make it less expensive to take the LIRR. brought to you by SCOTT BARON & ASSOCIATES, P.C.
