During the tour, Walcott met with members of the school’s student government and talked to the children about their work in the school and individual future plans. “I am always blown away by our students. The students that are here are sincere, they’re nice, they’re smart, they’re engaged…” Walcott said. “And they represent the students who are throughout the system. They are really talented in terms of having a vision and a dream of what they want to accomplish.” Following the meeting with the children, he addressed issues in the Department of Education, including overcrowding, co-location and phasing out schools. Walcott said the department is still actively searching for sites to build new schools to alleviate overcrowding. As for the question of what the Chancellor will do after stepping down from the position effective December 31, he said, “To be honest, I don’t know.” THE COURIER/Photo by Liam La Guerre Outgoing Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott made his final school visit to Queens Gateway to Heath Sciences Secondary School in Jamaica.
