64 The QUEE NS Courier • DECEMBER 17, 2015 for breaking news visit www.qns.com Maria Rodriguez, 93, beloved mother and Corona merchant Maria Rodriguez, a long-time Corona merchant and mother of Wyckoff Heights Medical Center CEO Ramon Rodriguez, died on Monday, Dec. 14, at the age of 93. She was born María Teresa Iglésias was on Oct. 5, 1922 in Manhattan to Jesús Iglésias and Tomasa Gonzalez, who migrated from Galícia, Spain. On Dec. 7, 1949, she married Ramón M. Rodriguez, a fellow Gallego, who died on September 23, 1998. In 1952, the family moved to Corona, where María spent the rest of her life. She was the mother of two sons, Ramón and Tomás Rodriguez. In addition to raising her two sons, she was a businesswoman. A family member’s failing restaurant OBIT required her to manage and then own La Coruña Restaurant on 14th Street in Manhattan, two blocks known as “Little Spain”. Later, she was a local merchant in Corona for 10 years, her retail wine and liquor store was across the street from the Lemon Ice King of Corona and Parkside Restaurant. She was always known as the person to speak to when someone needed a shoulder to cry on. Her family remembers her total commitment to them and the people who she knew needed a helping hand. They recalled her sense of humor and humble nature, never wanting anything herself except for the occasional pork chop dinner and ice cream dessert. In her last days, family members recalled, she was always worried that her family was spending too much time with her, as she was concerned that maybe their supervisors might be upset. Rodriguez is survived by her two sons, four grandchildren, Tomás, Gabriel, Isabella and Julian and two loving grateful daughters-in-law, Lizette Cantres and Deborah Díaz Rodriguez. The family will remember her at her wake from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 17, at Coppola-Migliore Inc. Funeral Home, 49-01 104th St., Corona.
