 Motorcyclist dies after  
 fatal collision in Astoria 
 A motorcyclist died aft er colliding with  
 a  minivan  in  Astoria  on  Wednesday,  
 Sept. 23. 
 Offi  cers  from  the  114th  Precinct  
 responded to a call regarding the collision  
 at the intersection of 33rd Street and  
 24th Avenue at approximately 9:15 p.m.  
 Wednesday night and found 27-year-old  
 Mariano Canales, of 58th Street, laying in  
 the road with trauma to his body. 
 EMS arrived at the scene and transported  
 Canales to Mount Sinai Hospital,  
 where he was pronounced dead. 
 An investigation by the NYPD Highway  
 District’s Collision Investigation Squad  
 determined that Canales was traveling  
 eastbound on 24th Avenue while operating  
 a 2020 Yamaha Chappy Scooter. He  
 was approaching the intersection at 33rd  
 Street — with no traffi  c signal — when  
 he struck a white 2005 Chrysler Town &  
 Country, police said. 
 Th  e minivan, operated by a 73-year-old  
 man, was traveling southbound on 33rd  
 Street before stopping at a stop sign and  
 entering the intersection when Canales  
 struck the passenger side front door of  
 the vehicle, according to the investigation. 
 Th  e driver of the minivan remained  
 on the scene and was not injured, police  
 said.Th 
   ere have been no arrests and the  
 investigation remains ongoing.

 Corona and Elmhurst 
 Police arrest Elmhurst man  
 for attempting to lure 11-yearold  
 girl into car in Corona 
 An Elmhurst man was arrested aft er he  
 allegedly attempted to lure an 11-year-old  
 girl into his car in Corona. 
 On Monday, Oct. 26, around 8:30 a.m.,  
 an 11-year-old girl was walking in front of  
 52-02 103rd St., when Frank Ayala drove  
 up besides her, police said. 
 Ayala, 28, attempted to speak to the girl  
 from inside the gray sedan he was driving,  
 as she walked down the sidewalk, according  
 to the NYPD. 
 When the girl refused, Ayala drove off ,  
 cops said. No injuries were reported as a  
 result of this incident. 
 Ayala was charged with luring a child  
 to commit a felony, acting in a manner to  
 injure a child and harassment. 
 Police believe the car Ayala was driving  
 has been used in similar attempts to lure  
 children into the car. Th  e 2001 Buick regal  
 four-door sedan has the license plate number  
 “JRB3713,” according to the police. 
 Th  e investigation is ongoing.

 Subway menace spits  
 at, punches female  
 straphanger on E train in  
 Jackson Heights: NYPD 
 Police are searching for the man who  
 spit  in  a  straphanger’s  face  and  then  
 punched her in the head multiple times  
 aft er she attempted to chase him off   the  
 train on Th  ursday, Oct. 29. 
 Authorities say the suspect was on board  
 a Manhattan-bound E train around 10  
 a.m. on Oct. 29 and walked up to a female  
 straphanger as the train was approaching  
 the Roosevelt Avenue/74th Street subway  
 station in Jackson Heights. Th  e man then  
 spit in her face and attempted to run away,  
 police said. 
 Th  e 32-year-old woman was chasing  
 the spitter when he turned around and  
 punched her in the forehead multiple  
 times before fl eeing in an unknown direction, 
  according to authorities. 
 Th e woman was treated at Elmhurst  
 Hospital for pain to her head, police said.
