Fatoullah, Esq. and Yan Lian Kuang-Maoga, Esq. It’s that time of the year again. For all seniors who are on Medicare, October 15th to December 7th is the time period in which to make any changes to your Medicare Part C or Part D plan. Any changes made will take effect January 1, 2014. Medicare beneficiaries must make sure that any required or desired changes to their plans are effectuated during this time frame. Once the enrollment period closes on December 7th, you will not be able to make any changes to your Medicare plan, with some exceptions. Let’s first review the different parts of Medicare. Medicare Part A is the hospital insurance that covers inpatient care in hospitals and skilled nursing facilities, hospice and home health care. Medicare Part B is the medical insurance that covers outpatient care, doctor’s services, medical equipment, some home health care and some preventive elder law services. Medicare Part C is known as “Medicare Advantage.” Medicare Advantage gives seniors the option to choose health plans that are run by private insurance companies that are Medicare approved. Medicare Advantage plans provide Medicare Part A and Part B coverage and often also provide drug coverage. Anyone who is enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan is essentially no longer covered by “Original Medicare.” Lastly, Medicare Part D provides prescription drug coverage. This October 15th to December 7th enrollment period is the open enrollment period for Medicare Advantage and Medicare prescription drug coverage. During this period, one can do the following: • Change from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage Plan; • Change from a Medicare Advantage Plan back to Original Medicare; • Change from one Medicare Advantage Plan to another Medicare Advantage Plan; • Change from one Medicare Advantage Plan that does not offer drug coverage to one that does offer drug coverage; • Change from a Medicare Advantage Plan that does have a drug coverage to one that does not offer drug coverage; • Join a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan; • Change from one Medicare Prescription Drug Plan to another Medicare Prescription Drug Plan; and • Terminate Medicare Prescription Drug cov - erage completely. This enrollment period is a great opportunity for seniors to review whether their current Medicare plans work for them. If not, this is the time to find a plan that is more fitting and make the switch. For example, seniors will want to change their Part D plans if their prescription drugs are not on their current plan’s formulary. They want to make it comfortable.” Crennan said the group is additionally willing to accommodate each tenant and is able to do things such as divide the floors to suit various companies.
