The evening will take place at JCAL’s Jamaica Performing Arts Center (JPAC) from 7pm till 10pm. Queens Borough President Melinda Katz, along with New York City Councilman I. Daneek Miller, will present citations to the evening’s honorees for their commitment to the cultural and economic development of Southeast Queens. The JCAL honorees include Patricia Chin who is founder of VP Records, the largest reggae label in the world, and a longtime supporter of Caribbean culture in Jamaica Queens since the 1970s; Susan Deutsch, the President of Capital Initiatives, whose work over 40 years ago led to the founding of JCAL and the revitalization of the Jamaica area; and Philippa Karteron, founder and CEO of Galleria Noire, Queens community leader, former Executive Director for the Council for Airport Opportunity, philanthropist and longstanding board member of JCAL. “JCAL continues to serve as the anchor arts institution of Downtown Jamaica, offering premier visual, performing and literary arts and education programs that enhance Queens’ profile to both residents and visitors alike,” said Queens Borough President Melinda Katz. “JCAL is integral to the Jamaica NOW Action Plan and a vested partner in the comprehensive revitalization of Downtown Jamaica. The groundswell of these efforts is in no small part due to the dedication of JCAL’s staff, volunteers, and local leaders like the evening’s extraordinary honorees who selflessly contribute so much to the Southeast Queens community.” The evening will also feature a choreographed piece by David Gwirtzman, commissioned for this year’s JCAL Making Moves Dance Festival. Also performing are several local musicians from the Jamaica community and the students from our Saturday arts programs. A Letter of Commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the program, was presented by the principal to this scholastically talented senior. About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise.
