Garden officials announced on Oct. 1 the completion of a $5.5 million repaving project of all major walkways. The effort was supported by Queens Borough President Melinda Katz, the City Council and the office of Mayor Bill de Blasio. Construction efforts were led by the city Department of Cultural Affairs and the Department of Design and Construction. Principal areas conne cting the “Gardens on Parade” section, Visitor & Administration Building, Oak Allée and Cherry Circle were the main focus of the project, as well as secondary pedestrian paths. The paths — which have not been upgraded since the 1964-65 World’s Fair — were also improved to enhance stormwater flow to existing bioswales. Additionally, the project included a new irrigation system A ceremonial ribbon cutting of the new walkways in the Queens Botanical Garden. and two wells, a stepped ramp providing access from College Point Boulevard to Flushing Meadow Corona Park and various landscape upgrades such as pruning, fertilizing, regrading, and new topsoil and sod. Queens Botanical Garden Executive Director Susan Lacerte said the project was a beautiful development and the organization could not have done it without support from the city officials and agencies involved. “The pathways are now a beautiful, walkable ribbon throughout the garden inviting exploration, learning and healthful living,” Lacerte said. “And I’ve dreamed of an automated irrigation system for almost 20 years now, so that our staff does not have to lug hoses. We are truly grateful.” Katz noted the Queens Botanical Garden is a treasured gem of the borough enjoyed by Queens families and tourists from around the globe.
