First Central Savings Bank is connecting
the corporate world to the natural
world. Th e Alley Pond Environmental
Center (APEC) hosted its 2021 Welcome
Autumn Concert, where First Central
Savings Bank’s Michael Serao was
recognized as the “Corporate Friend of
the Environment.”
Th e award recognizes the bank’s dedication
to community banking and responsibility
for the education of the natural world.
“Many years went into supporting the
nonprofi t world that are the heart of our
communities, and our partnership with
APEC means so much to me that the
work that we are so passionate about also
resonates with others,” said Serao, who
serves as executive vice president and
chief administrative offi cer.
Councilman Paul Vallone attended
the concert and honored Serao with the
award. Th is is the eighth time the award
has been presented.
According to Irene V. Scheid, executive
director at APEC, First Central Savings
Bank has supported their programs for a
few years.
“Th ey also have provided supplies for
some of our children’s programs. We
appreciate their help to keep our programs
active as we get through these
unsettling times together,” Scheid said.
Th e bank’s $5,000 sponsorship will go
toward enhancing APEC’s programs,
environmental studies for youth and raising
awareness for generations to come.
“Th ank you to APEC for providing
inspiration not only for myself but to
hundreds of children and future environmental
liaisons,” Serao said. “I hope that
this recognition of our work can serve
as an inspiration to others in the fi eld.
Remember, if our work can make a diff erence,
so can yours.”
Th e event was hosted at APEC’s temporary
facility in Oakland Gardens, while
their Northern Boulevard location undergoes
renovations. Gathering Time, a folkmusic
ensemble, provided a soothing
ambiance at the picnic-style venue.

In celebration of the new offi ce space,
which is located at 73-11 Grand Ave., the
owners welcomed about 50 guests for a
ribbon-cutting and social event.
Al Letizio Jr., president and chief executive
offi cer of A.J. Letizio, said they were
glad to be in the metro area in New York.
He said he felt the enthusiasm that his
family felt when they fi rst came by boat to
New York as immigrants from Italy about
120 years ago.
“Th is is just a great evening and we want
to thank all of you who have come out
to spend some time with us to mark
this moment as we open up our new
facility,” Letizio Jr. said.
Letizio Jr. spoke about the family business
and their logo, which represents “the
dawn of the new day.”
“No matter what happened the day
before, every day the sun rises again and
you get a chance to start fresh and new,”
Letizio Jr. said. “So here we are 34 years
into our venture and we’re committed to
making sure every day with what we do is
a dawn of a new day.”
