ReCaFo Real Caribbean Food LLC. 420 Doughty Boulevard Suite 202 Inwood, NY 11096 www.recafo.com Taste ‘Real Caribbean Food’ at the Flea Real Caribbean Food, also known as ReCaFo, is the product of two entrepreneurs, David Wisdom and Dave Smith, who dreamt of introducing authentic Caribbean food to the American marketplace. Wisdom and Smith are migrants from Jamaica, making them connoisseurs of the spices, flavors and techniques that make Jamaican food a sensation worldwide. Currently ReCaFo offers catering, manufacturing and distribution of Caribbean food, with a focus on Jamaican cuisine. It is a new addition to the LIC Flea. “The aim is not only to make Real Caribbean Food a world famous brand, but also something that makes the world know about our food, heritage and culture and to spice up their palate,” said Wisdom. In order to ensure the best quality and flavors of their food, Wisdom and Smith devoted two years to research and market testing prior to launching their company. Wisdom wanted their products to taste “as authentic as if you were on a beach in Jamaica having some jerk chicken and sipping on a coconut.” At the LIC Flea, ReCaFo is offering their ready-to-serve products including jerk chicken, jerk pork, beef, chicken and vegetable patties, Jamaican rum pastries, tropical juices and more. Wisdom hopes “to feature a line-up of authentic Caribbean foods from all or most of the islands of the region” in the future. NONNA’S RICEBALLS (516) 398-0630 www.nonnasriceballs.com When Daniel Valenza’s grandmother brought her recipe for riceballs back from Borgetto, Sicily, he knew he had to find a way to share that dish with the world. After mastering the recipe himself, he opened Nonna’s Riceballs one year ago, and has since been pursuing that goal. Although the traditional Sicilian recipe calls for filling the riceballs with ground meat and peas, Valenza has added his own flair, and now offers traditional, buffalo chicken, cheeseteak, and broccoli and mozzarella riceballs. In addition to bringing these four dishes to the LIC Flea every Sunday until the end of October, Valenza also brings a fifth riceball with a special weekly flavor. ART PHOTO NEW YORK (516) 992 – 6060 www.artphotony.com Kirill Poliakov founded Art Photo New York in 2005 when he realized he had a talent for photography. Since then, he and his girlfriend Alla Carti have been spending their time taking pictures of their travels and selling their photographs on Art Photo New York’s specially varnished canvases. Art Photo New York will be at the LIC Flea every Sunday, and the photographs are best seen in person due to the unique varnish on the canvases, which gives each photograph a 3D-effect. Among Art Photo New York’s best sellers are shots of Central Park and the Brooklyn Bridge, and it also has an extensive travel section featuring shots of car doors and windows. “We started doing the LIC Market to bring ourselves closer to the people and give them the ability to come and see our photographs,” said Poliakov. RUMMAGE 718 (917)-975-1772 www.rummage718.com In April, Kathleen McCelland started Rummage 718, an antiques shop with a wide variety of items for all ages. Most of what she sells comes from her own personal collection, which she has been cultivating since childhood. Half of Rummage 718’s business is comprised of children’s items, such as costumes and collectible toys, while the other half focuses more on home goods and decorative items. Rummage 718 is not concerned as much with clothing as it is with accessories, such as broaches, men’s neckwear, and more. It also features magazines, comics, picture frames and plates from as far back as the 1940s. Among McCelland’s best sellers are her china, vases, glassware, vintage mugs and thermoses. “I like to rummage through yesterday’s favorites, and my goal when I do that is to find things that can hold and maintain their value,” she said. Rummage 718 will be at the LIC Flea every Saturday until the end of October. LICFLEA&FOOD The ping pong balls were bouncing back and forth this past weekend as LIC Flea & Food hosted its first Ping Pong Open. On August 24 and 25, 50 people took part in the free table tennis tournament, making it a huge success and fun-filled weekend. Patrick Geraghty, 36, from Sunnyside became the first champion of the Ping Pong Open. Yet, according to his fiancée and LIC Flea vendor Tricia Reed, of Reed Chic Boutique, this wasn’t his first time holding a paddle. As a teenager, Geraghty played on the national ping pong team in Ireland before coming to the United States. “I hadn’t played properly in a long time,” said Geraghty. “It was good to get back to it.” After seeing the LIC Flea newsletter promoting the tournament, Reed told Geraghty to participate and after 20 years of being away from the table, he decided to play once again. “He was excited. I was excited to see him play because I had never seen him play,” said Reed. “Everyone was talking about his serve.” Geraghty took home two tickets to the US Open, which Reed said they used to attend an August 27 tennis match, a $25 TD Bank gift card and $60 to spend at LIC Flea. LIC Flea & Food is located at 5-25 46th Avenue in Long Island City. It is open every Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. through the end of October and will be open Labor Day weekend.
