This event will provide an opportunity for those in attendance to watch beautiful calligraphy and paintings be created before their eyes. Come 15 minutes early to enjoy a bit of traditional Taiwanese puppet theater: “Monkey King VS. Bull King,” which will feature magic and martial arts. SUNDAY, AUGUST 4 If you haven’t had enough of street fairs this summer, head down to the Junction Boulevard Festival, taking place from 11 a.m. to 5p.m. on Junction Boulevard between Roosevelt Avenue and 35th Avenue in Corona. SATURDAY, AUGUST 10 AND SUNDAY, AUGUST 11 Flushing Meadows-Corona Park will host the Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival. The multi-cultural event includes two days of Dragon Boat Racing, a variety of performances, and a multi-ethnic food court. The event is free and races will be held on Meadow Lake within the park rain or shine. Bring the entire family and enjoy as over 170 teams and more than 2000 participants compete with each other and celebrate the “Year of the Rabbit.” From 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. both days. KIDS’ STUFF SATURDAY, JULY 20 Families and children are welcome to join local artists in Socrates Sculpture Park for a summer series of sculpture workshops. Each week’s workshop will have a theme and teach a certain skill. The workshop for July 20 is “Landscape Translation.” Children will be taken around the park and encouraged to interpret their surroundings as potential artistic pieces. THURSDAY, JULY 25 Hip to Hip Theater Company kicks off the fi rst show of its 7th “Shakespeare in the Park” season. The fi rst show will be “Love Labor’s Lost” at GLOW-IN-THE-DARK 5K DANCE PARTY SATURDAY, JULY 27, Dress in black and don your glowing swag for the Glow-In-the-Dark 5K Dance Party at Citi Field. Participants will run to dance music pumping from speakers along the course, while a portion of all proceeds will go to providing solar-lanterns to children in Somalia. The cost is $45 and all participants are welcome to come and enjoy the Glow-In-the-Dark after party which will feature a live DJ, cash bar and food. Visit www.livingsocial.com to sign up. FRIDAY, JULY 26 Come join the fun at the 35th Annual Thunderbird American Indian Pow Wow at the Queens Farm Museum. Over 40 Indian nations will be represented at New York’s oldest and largest pow wow, which will feature three days of intertribal dance competitions to which the public is invited. The event is held in the apple orchard on the farm grounds, and will feature a large selection of Native American arts, crafts, jewelry, and food. SATURDAY, JULY 27 Alley pond Environmental Center is hosting two days this summer for children to play with sand and create works of art. Children ages 3-4 (July 10) and ages 5-7 (July 27) can come play in a sand table, create beautiful pictures using colored sand, meet live, sand-dwelling animals and enjoy EDITOR’S PICK a snack. Cost is $18 per child and the event is limited to 12 participants. The Alley Pond Environmental Center is located at 228-06 Northern Boulevard. Bring the family and come enjoy outdoor fi lms on the waterfront in central Astoria this summer. Each Monday through August 26, the park will screen a different fi lm, starting on July 29 with “Annie.” Later in the summer, Disney’s “Brave” and “Finding Nemo” will be shown as well.
