Those who received Citations of Honor from Borough President Katz during the event were United Staffing Registry President Bennedict E. Santos (l.), playwright and poet Dr. Nonilon V. Queano (second from l.), industrialist and philanthropist Loida N. Lewis (second from r.), and the Honorable Mario Lopez de Leon Jr., the Philippine Consul General to New York (r.). GRAND OPENIN G COMMUNI TY LEADERS MEE T s people making a buzz BY LIAM LA GUERE The Landrum School of Performing Arts in Whitestone celebrated the grand opening of its new theatre with students and elected officials on June 13. The 66-year-old school currently enrolls 350 students, and with the new theatre and accompanying recording studio, the school plans to introduce acting and singing programs. The school will add four new teachers to its staff to teach the programs. City Councilman Paul Vallone and U.S. Rep. Steve Israel met with community leaders from Whitestone to discuss some of the issues facing the Whitestone community and brainstorm ideas for working together to tackle these concerns. Among those attending the meeting were Debra Markell (Waterside Estates at Cresthaven), Devon O’Connor (Welcome to Whitestone), Warren Schreiber (President’s Co-op & Condo Council), Frank Macchio (CB 7) and Mike Kurtz (Clearview Gardens).
