Prospective volunteers will learn gardening basics while also working hands-on with the garden’s plants, while also getting to explore the garden’s ever-changing scenery. Registration for this volunteer event is open now, and any questions can be directed to 718-886-3800. Volunteers will meet at 8:45 a.m. to start at 9 a.m. or 12:45 p.m. for a 1 p.m. start. 43-50 Main St. 3 Flushing Town Hall will hold its monthly Open Mic Night, hosted by poet and storyteller Bobby Gonzalez. The theme for this month is “Fathers.” The theme is designed to inspire poets, storytellers, freestyle rappers and emerging artists of all ages. For more information, call 718- 463-7700. The event is free, and no RSVP is required. 6 p.m., 137-35 Northern Blvd. FRIDAY, JUNE 2 4 The Greater Flushing Chamber of Commerce presents “Anna and Vladimir: The Love That ROCKED The World” for three shows starting June 2 at Flushing Town Hall. The rock opera will showcase ancient history through modern music, dance and romance, specifically the relationship Looking to explore your ornithological side? Avian enthusiast Shari Romar, former New Media Manager at the Queens Botanical Garden, will be presenting a virtual tour of The Birds of Queens at the Douglaston Queens Library. The virtual tour will show the natural habitats of the borough and the birds that use them. The free event has limited seating and is on a first-come, first-served basis. 4 to 5:15 p.m. on Thursday, June 1, 249-01 Northern Blvd. between St. Vladimir of Rus (ancient Russia) and Anna Porphyrogenita of Byzantium (ancient Greece.) Tickets to each show are $20. 7-9 p.m., 137-35 Northern Blvd. 5.Listen to people who are not New Yorkers tell jokes about their experiences in The Big Apple! Transplants Comedy Show at the QED is about comedians who tell stories about where they are originally from and the journey that led them to New York City. Comedians performing have been featured on the likes of Comedy Central, MTV and Sirius XM Radio. Tickets are $7 online and $10 the day of the show. Convoy of Hope will be having a Hope Day at Padavan Preller Fields in Bellerose. What exactly is a Hope Day? Along with Live Entertainment and a Kids Zone, Convoy of Hope, who considers their events to be a “united act of compassion that touches families in desperate need,” will be offering free groceries, community and health services and family photos. The event will be happening rain or shine and is free for families. 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., 236- 02 Hillside Ave. 7 The Alley Pond Environmental Center is holding a “Concert for the Environment” featuring the folk band Gathering Time. The band, who was voted best band runner-up and top folk band in the 2011 Long Island Press Reader’s Poll, is referred to as a head turning folk rock trio that has been getting a buzz on the northeast regional folk scene and who appeal to audiences of all ages. Tickets for the concert are $20, and there is also an adults-only ticket which includes a reception before the concert. 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. (reception at 6:30 p.m.) 228-06 Northern Blvd. 8 Have you ever wondered about the history of Queens’ Civil War- Era Army Base? Urban Park Rangers will be giving a special tour of the historic Fort Totten in Bayside, specifically showing the underground tunnels that are often filled with mystery and rumors.
