In her capacity at Flushing House, Simms develops relationships with its older adult residents and their families. She works to learn more about each resident’s situation and works to help them maintain active and independent lives for as long as possible. Simms graduated from Mercy College in 1997 with a bachelor’s degree in social work; that same year, she joined Jewish Association for Services for the Aged (JASA). Four years later, she earned her master’s degree in social work from New York University. In April 2013, Simms left JASA for her current position at Flushing House. “I could not have asked for a more rewarding position as director of resident services,” she said. “Here, I’m broadening my background as a social worker and assisting not just the residents I serve, but also the many family members who are seeking to help their aging parents. I am most grateful to receive this great honor.” Built in 1974, Flushing House is the largest not-for-profi t independent living retirement residence in New York State.
