48 THE QUEENS COURIER • MAY 23, 2013 FOR BREAKING NEWS VISIT www.queenscourier.com Queens Courier Expo focuses on Well being and financial wellness BY MAGGIE HAYES [email protected] Queens residents were once again able to get the latest facts and tips for living a long, healthy life — and for making sure their finances are in top shape — at The Queens Courier’s Health and Financial Fitness Expo. “It’s very interesting,” said Manek Werdiger, a resident of the North Shore Towers. “At my age, I look for things like this to make my life pleasant.” The expo, held Friday, May 17, at North Shore Towers brought together over 30 vendors and nearly 200 attendees. Keynote speaker Ronald Fatoullah, estate and elder law attorney, spoke about five essential documents all seniors should have. “You need someone to manage your assets the way you want them to be managed,” Fatoullah said. The panel discussion speakers The five documents dealt with a will, power of attorney, a health care proxy, a living will and a living trust. Cindy Roth, managing director of the Kornreich Technology Center at the Viscardi Center, spoke about safety in the home. Roth’s group focuses on reducing isolation through tactics like teaching seniors how to use new mobile technology. “It really adds to the quality of life,” Roth said. “We’re able to provide them with knowledge and training so they won’t be isolated.” The center also provides assistance technology for activities such as cooking, with the aim of helping seniors stay at home as long as possible. “It’s very important for seniors to be able to maintain that,” Roth said. Victoria Hughes of Jzanus Home Care, Inc. came to the expo as a vendor. The group already provides services to people in the Towers, but hopes to expand. “We really wanted to work with the Towers and penetrate in here a little more,” Hughes said. “We’re a pretty close-knit agency.” Jzanus Home Care supplies health care aids and personal care aids as well as nursing services to their patients so they can continue to live in their homes. For attendees ready to move into a senior living facility, Susan Cohen was at the expo to speak about Brandywine Senior Living at The Savoy. At Brandywine, Cohen said, residents have nothing but opportunities to form new relationships. A unique addition to the expo was Dr. Perry Frankel, a cardiologist at St. Francis Hospital, who brought his team to conduct carotid tests, blood pressure screenings and other checks. Frankel said falling is a big issue among the aging population. He added that his tests frequently show an inner ear imbalance as the cause of tumbling. “We’ve picked up total blockages in the carotid,” Frankel said. “The name of the game is to prevent people from going to the emergency room.” Additional speakers included Dr. Harvey Passes of Passes Dental, Dr. Mary Andrea of the Podiatry and Wound Care Hyperbaric Center, Carl Surface of Bussani Mobility, David Schwartz, CFP and chairman and CEO of the FCE Group, Christine A. Feingold of Sinai Chapels, James Christopher of New York Community Bancorp and Karen Taylor of Aetna Insurance. Many prizes were given out including an in office teeth whitening, a take home kit and teeth cleaning (value $600) donated by Passes Dental, a fruit arrangement and chocolate covered strawberries donated by Edible arrangements, gift certificates and many other prizes.
