The gala features a live, in-person performance by America’s beloved tenor Daniel Rodriguez, New York City’s own “singing policeman,” whose emotional a cappella renditions of “God Bless America” and “The Star Spangled Banner,” did much to lift the nation’s spirits in the wake of September 11, 2001. The awards are named after the late Rose Kryzak, a prodigious public advocate who fought for the rights of older adults. A resident of the UAM-sponsored Flushing House for her last 13 years, she passed on June 24, 1999 at 99 years of age. To keep her legacy alive and further the many causes she cared for, UAM established the Kryzak Awards in 2000. Rose Kryzak was best known for spearheading passage of New York State’s landmark 1987 Elderly Pharmaceutical Insurance Coverage (EPIC) legislation. But earlier in her life she fought for passage of Social Security, for the poor and elderly during Federal budget cuts of the 1980’s, for increases in New York’s share of Supplemental Security Income, and for mandatory Medicare assignments and passage of universal health care. Since year 2000, Rose Kryzak’s family has attended each Gala to help honor the award winners for their continuing efforts on behalf of older adults. The award winners must have a record of establishing legislation, or operating/expanding programs that benefit the older adult population, or a good track record of advocacy and securing funds for senior programs. This year’s honorees are Hon. Toby Ann Stavisky (D), Steven Goodman, Ed.D, and Alan Weinberg, LCSW. “They have all soldiered on in the tradition of Rose Kryzak, making major contributions of service and caring for older adults,” said Robert F. Salant, Flushing House director of community relations. “The legacy of Rose Kryzak shall not be forgotten, and that’s why each year since her passing, we bestow these awards in her name,” Salant said. Hon. Toby Ann Stavisky (D), is a seven-term New York State Senator. She sponsored numerous pieces of legislation which directly benefit New York’s older adult population. Stavisky’s district comprises the Queens neighborhoods of Flushing, Forest Hills, Rego Park, Oakland Gardens, Fresh Meadows, Hillcrest, Jackson Heights, Elmhurst, Woodside, Pomonok, Queensboro Hill, and Electchester. Steven Goodman, Ed.D, was the long-time head of Samuel Field YM & YWHA. The Samuel Field Y is a nonprofit, multi-service agency with flagship sites in Little Neck, Bayside, Forest Hills, and 33 additional locations in Queens, providing an array of programs and services to over 35,000 people. After nearly a half-century working at the Samuel Field Y, including the last two decades as their CEO and executive vice president, Dr. Goodman recently retired. He now serves as a Special Consultant to the Y. Under his leadership, the Y focused like a laser beam on the needs of older adults, their families and children. Alan Weinberg, LCSW, was the long-time Social Work Manager at the world-renowned Parker Jewish Institute for Health Care & Rehabilitation, Lake Success, New York. Weinberg served at the Parker Institute for 18 years. He recently resigned to continue his career in the geriatric health care field. His new position is Care Manager of Social Work at Fidelis Care At Home, a leading Managed Long Term Care Program based in Rego Park, New York. Also featured will be presentations of the UAM Older Adult Ministry Award, to Doris Walker, an Elder of the Hollis Presbyterian Church, and Dorothy Ramsay, a Deacon of the Valley Stream Presbyterian Church. The fundraising gala takes place May 8, 2014, at historic Flushing Town Hall, Flushing, New York, starting at 6:00 p.m., and running until 11:00 p.m. All proceeds support a special endowment fund, which allows Flushing House to remain affordable for many of the older adults who live there. Those who attend will help support the Flushing House mission, and be entertained by special guest Daniel Rodriguez, who thrills audiences the world over with his powerful operatic voice. Rodriguez will be honored with a special award for his support of various nonprofits, especially those which serve older adults.
