Some have triumphed over personal challenges through determination and strength of spirit; others have performed extraordinary acts of volunteerism, or shown exceptional abilities scholastically, artistically, or athletically. All have had a powerful impact on their families, peers, or communities. Nominations were made by parents, teachers, counselors, mentors, coaches, and organization leaders who are very familiar with the special qualities that have made each of these young women a Girl of Merit. cONGRaTULaTIONS! Bianca RoBinson If 100 is perfect as an academic score, Bianca Robinson is better than perfect. Yet her 100.56 academic average and membership in the elite ARISTA Society tells only part of the story. This John Bowne High School 11th grader has potential in many ways, and she puts it all to use. For Bianca, it’s not all about just her. She encourages others to exceed their limits and excel at whatever they do, whether it’s academics or athletics. Bianca’s encouragement of an interest in others has had a powerful and positive effect on the lives of many of her peers as well as her family members. For her academic focus and success, and her contributions to the lives of so many others we name Bianca Robinson a Girl of Merit. Emily singh Though only 14 and a freshman at Mary Louis Academy in Hillside, Emily Singh is already focused on a career in forensic science and on pursuing her college education at either Penn State or the University of Miami. Whether it winds up being forensic science or rocket science, Emily will be well prepared from her consistently excellent academic performance in classes such as chemistry and geometry, where she usually finds herself the only freshman among sophomores. But all work and no play is no fun, so Emily plays basketball in the GVL girls basketball league on Long Island, watches Netflix, skateboards, and just spends time with friends. For her foresight, focus, and commitment to academic achievement while maintaining a balanced life with room for family and friends, we name Emily Singh a Girl of Merit. BRiana Diaz It’s fair to say that Briana Diaz is magical, because she is a regular performer of illusions at children’s birthday parties. But she performs magic of different kind when she uses her volunteer time at a local nursing home to make smiles appear, tears disappear, and memories reappear. Family are never an afterthought to Briana, who always has time and a kind word for everyone in her family. She shows how much she cares for every member of her family through not only word, but also through her deeds. An honor student at St. Francis Prep High, she is committed to all her academic efforts and passionate about art. This summer will see her in Paris, Provence and Barcelona where she will immerse herself in the art she so deeply loves and appreciates. For her multiple and broad interests intellectually and for her passion and compassion for those around her, we name Briana Diaz a Girl of Merit.
