50 THE QUEENS COURIER • SENIOR LIVING • FEBRUARY 21, 2013 FOR BREAKING NEWS VISIT www.queenscourier.com senior living s Margaret Tietz Nursing & Rehabilitation Center EVOLVING WITH THE NEEDS OF THE COMMUNITY The traditional nursing home is not what you fi nd at the Margaret Tietz Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. “The community still looks at a nursing home as a place for long term care. But the terminology of nursing home is really not the terminology anymore,” said Linda Spiegel, director of public affairs. “It’s changing. It’s really evolving as the needs of the community grows.” When Margaret Tietz, now an affi liate of CenterLight Health System, fi rst opened in 1971, most people were coming in for long-term care. But admission numbers in the last few years have been growingly driven by shorter stays, Spiegel said. Most short-term rehab patients stay approximately three weeks to two months. To keep up with the times, Margaret Tietz has increased the number of beds in its short-term rehab unit from 14 to 50. “We saw the need in the community,” Spiegel said. A modernized gym in its newly renovated short-term rehab center helps patients achieve their maximum functional capacity and get back to their homes and their community in the shortest time possible. Patients receive physical, occupational and speech therapy from therapists there as well. “We have a wonderful medical staff,” said medical director Dr. Nidhi Dugar. “We can provide all services for patients who come in for short term rehab.” Patients can benefi t from the center’s in-house radiology services, portable X-rays, respiratory therapy and wound consultants. The rehab program helps patients recovering from or coping with stroke, amputation, back surgeries, brain injury, fractures, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s Disease and more. Margaret Tietz also offers long term care, hospice, palliative care, and adult day health care. Margaret Tietz is located at 164-11 Chapin Parkway in Jamaica. The gala is to support the mission of Flushing House, the not-forprofi t retirement residence. Rodriguez was all set to perform at the gala’s previously scheduled date of November 8, 2012. As Flushing House supporters already know, Superstorm Sandy and the unseasonably early nor’easter combined and caused widespread power outages and gas shortages, which convinced Flushing House to postpone their fundraiser. The gala is now rescheduled for Thursday, April 25 from 6 to 11 p.m. at Flushing Town Hall. Rodriguez will receive the Humanitarian Award and three honorees will receive The Rose Kryzak Senior Leadership Award: Estela Divino of Mineola, social services director, Regal Heights Rehabilitation and Health Care Center; Carol O’Dette of Bellerose, social services director, Ozanam Hall of Queens Nursing Home; and Mary Sheehan- Lohne of West Hempstead, social services director, Cliffside Rehabilitation and Health Care Center. Additionally, two honorees will receive The Older Adult Ministry Award: Thelma Gerold of Bellmore, Deacon, Bellmore Presbyterian Church; and Lisa Sisenwein of Flushing, Clerk of Session and Secretary, First Presbyterian Church of Whitestone. Space is limited, but there’s still room for additional guests. If you would like to attend, please include your name, attach a $75 check (per person) payable to United Adult Ministries, and reply to: Robert F. Salant, Director of Community Relations, Flushing House, 38-20 Bowne Street, Flushing, NY 11354. Your check must be received by the April 15 cutoff date. You can call Salant at 347-532-3025 with any questions or email rsalant@ uam.org. The annual fundraising gala benefi ts a special endowment fund, allowing Flushing House to remain affordable for many of the older adults who live there. In its 38 year history, it has never had a resident evicted due to an inability to pay. As a 501 (c) (3) not-for-profi t, tax exempt and registered charity, all gifts are fully tax-deductible.
