BY ANGY ALTAMIRANO [email protected] It’s been 50 years since The Beatles first set foot in New York, and now the historic moment will live on. On Friday, February 7, the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey, together with The Fest for Beatles Fans and radio station Q 104.3 FM, celebrated the 50th anniversary of The Fab Four’s 1964 landing and press conference at John F. Kennedy International Airport, kicking off their first U.S. tour. During the celebration, which was held at the airport’s landmarked TWA Flight Center, Port Authority Executive Director Pat Foye and Deputy Executive Director Deb Gramiccioni unveiled a historical marker inside the flight center, paying tribute to the group’s arrival. Liverpool’s Lord Mayor Councillor Gary Millar was also in attendance, while The Beatles tribute band, Liverpool, played some of the group’s classic hits. MoMA PS1 selects design winner for Warm Up BY ANGY ALTAMIRANO [email protected] Summer might still be far away, but things are starting to heat up as a winner has been chosen to create the scenery for this year’s Warm Up series at MoMA PS1. The Museum of Modern Art and MoMA PS1 in Long Island City selected David Benjamin from design firm The Living as the winner of the 15th annual Young Architects Program (YAP). The winning project, called “Hy-Fi,” expected to open at MoMA PS1 in late June, was chosen from five finalists and will serve as a “temporary urban landscape” for the 2014 Warm Up summer music series, located in MoMA PS1’s outdoor courtyard. “After dedicating the whole building and satellite programs of MoMA PS1 to ecological awareness and climate change last year with ‘EXPO 1: New York,’ we continue in 2014 with ‘Hy-Fi,’ a nearly zero carbon footprint construction by The Living,” said Klaus Biesenbach, MoMA PS1 director and MoMA chief curator at large. Every year the winners develop creative designs for a temporary, outdoor installation at MoMA PS1 that would provide shade, seating and water to those who attend the Warm Up. The architects also have to address environmental issues, such as sustainability and recycling. The Living will create “Hy-Fi” using a new technique of bio-design that will assemble a structure made out of 100 percent organic material. The structure is a circular tower made of organic and reflective bricks, produced from the combination of corn stalks and living root structures, invented by Ecovative, a company The Living is working with in the project. “Hy-Fi” will also highlight local materials, and offer a direct relationship to New York State agriculture and innovation culture, city artists, non-profits and community gardens in Queens. While explaining her economic initiatives, Katz gave a patriotic lecture on Tuesday, February 11, rebranding Queens as the city’s prime tourist destination. “Manhattan should be known for recommending Queens restaurants and shopping, and all the cultural events that we have to offer,” Katz said. Among her goals, Katz vowed to restart predecessor Claire Shulman’s “War Room” to help solve overcrowding in schools, while supporting universal pre-kindergarten. “Space is needed, pre-k is needed,” Katz said. “We need to at least have our children start on equal footing and get the education they need.” The BP pledged that her administration will help future small businesses owners to navigate the process of creating their companies, and she plans to use real estate development projects to spur job growth. She wants to assist Long Island City as the next major tech hub, so more entrepreneurs, especially those graduating from the forthcoming Cornell-Technion school, stay in Queens. And Katz expressed her excitement for Governor Andrew Cuomo taking the lead to renovate area airports. “You come to the city of New York, we should have the top flight-- excuse the pun-- airports in the entire world,” Katz said. Turning to the Rockaways, Katz voiced support for permanent ferry service and wants “the boardwalk done before 2017.” She also reiterated in the speech that she will save the beloved New York State Pavilion. “The speech hit all the right notes,” said Rob MacKay of the Queens Economic Development Corporation. “I feel that Queens is ready to steal Brooklyn’s mojo.” THE COURIER/Photo by Liam La Guerre Borough President Melinda Katz explained her business initiatives and vowed to rebrand Queens as the New York City destination.
