First Look Shorts Screening
Be one of the first to see the 2019 First Look Festival shorts at the
Museum of the Moving Image. The First Look Festival has been praised
for its outsider and experimental films. The critically acclaimed festival
will include more than two dozen films, most being foreign. The 2019
First Look Festival on Jan. 21 will last 70 minutes, airing 10 short films.
These include “That Time in Hawai’i,” “Norman Norman,” “Practice”
and “Lasting Marks.” See where the future of cinema is headed, and
go to the 2019 First Look Festival at the MoMI.

9 NYC Talent Show: Self-
Proclaimed World’s Greatest
Open Stage and NYC Tradition
The Creek and The Cave host the
performance arts show, NYC Talent
Show an event that has been called
the world’s greatest open stage and
a real NYC tradition. Since the show
started over a decade ago by Debra
and Victor Varnado, the NYC performance
show has hosted greats such
as Kristen Schaal, Hannibal Buress,
Jim Gaffigan and Jonathan Aimes.
The show runs every Friday, creating
a welcoming space for performers
where anyone can walk on stage.

10. Kupfer Presents: Dance Theatre
of Harlem
The Dance Theater of Harlem will
perform at the Kupfer Center, honoring
the life and vision of Dr. Martin
Luther King. Now in its 50th season,
this highly praised Dance Theater has

Times, which described the group as
“one of ballet’s most exciting undertakings.”

12 GingerBread Lane House
Giveaway at The New York
Hall of Science
Come take home a piece of the largest
gingerbread village in the world
at The New York Hall of Science. This
2-ton exhibit took over nine months
and 1,500 hours to complete. Creator
Jon Lovitch works all year on the village
which spans over 300 feet. His
gingerbread villages have even been
featured in the Smithsonian Institute.
After three months on display, visitors
finally get a taste of the massive gingerbread
paradise. There is no extra
charge on top of general admission
prices, but be sure to arrive early. The
giveaway runs on a first-come, firstserved
basis.

13 Tyrannosaurus - A Comedy
Show at RaR Bar
Every Tuesday night, RaR in Long
Island City hosts Tyrannosaurus, the
stand-up comedy show with the best
comedians from all over the city.
Tyrannosaurus is produced by comedians
Leland Young, Randal Otis and
Jamie Clauson-Wolf, who have been
featured in high-caliber productions
such as Boston Comedy Festival,
Cinder Block Comedy Festival and
Broken Ankles Podcast. This week
comedians Ja-Ron Young, Shane
Gayle and Rohan Padhye will perform
diverse and stylized acts. The
Tyrannosaurus aims to give their audience
a wide range of comedy as
diverse as Queens itself.

author of “The Best Bad Things,” to
discuss her fifth critically acclaimed
novel, “The Pentagon Hotel.” This intricate
and complex book tells a story of
a gutsy gun moll who stumbles into
The Pentagon Hotel, an exclusively
black residence along with a missing
child crisis, after leaving Prohibitionera
Harlem. Lyndsay Faye has written
critically acclaimed novels such
as “Jane Steele” and “The Gods of
Gotham.”

15 Quiet Trivia and Comedy
Night
On Jan. 24, Quiet Events and Astoria’s
premier gastropub Katch Astoria team
up to combine the intellectual comradery
of trivia and the fun lightheartedness
of comedy to form a Quiet
Trivia and Comedy Night. Come alone
or come with your friends. There is no
prerequisite or special skill required to
have a ball. Upon arrival, patrons will
receive special wireless headphones
and can participate in three rounds of
easy trivia. This is to prevent groups
from eavesdropping on each others’
answers and allows the audience
hear the comedians. The trivia is led
by some of the cities funniest comedians
so there is never a dull moment.
As the scores are being tallied comedians
will perform their acts. At the
end of the night winners will also
receive special prizes.
