PAULSON editorial@queenscourier.com @QueensCourier New year, new name. As the clock struck midnight on Jan. 1, the North Shore-LIJ Health System adopted a new name: Northwell Health. Northwell Health operates throughout New York State and is made up of 21 hospitals, two medical schools, a research institute, and an insurance provider. Because its presence extends far beyond Long Island and consists of more than just its two formerly titular hospitals, executives felt that the name North Shore- LIJ did not adequately represent the system as a whole. More than 1,000 names were looked at, with about 600 being given serious consideration. “We were looking for a name that more broadly spoke to who we are as an organization,” said Terry Lynam, Northwell’s senior vice president and chief public relations officer. The name Northwell Health also reflects the system’s continued dedication to not only treating sickness, but to helping patients get well and stay well for many years to come. “As health care providers, we need to become advocates for better health,” Lynam said. With the name change also comes “Look North,” the system’s first marketing campaign in five years and the largest one in the system’s 25-year history. The campaign will feature Austin Sparacio, the newborn child of Vanessa and Joseph Sparacio, who was delivered 31 seconds after midnight on Jan. 1 and is the second baby to be born at LIJ in 2016. Northwell Health plans to continue expanding its outpatient practices with its current 20 urgent care centers, and plans to open more in years to come. These centers reduce emergency room wait times, and also reduce the need for people to visit an emergency room at all by providing urgently needed health care right in their communities.
