Don’t Nudge the Judge! DPhotos by Dawn Steinberg on’t mess with Judge Judy Sheindlin was the message NST Women’s Club members got on Wednesday, April 19th at their monthly meeting. Providing the entertaining program was Marjorie Gottlieb Wolfe, educator, lecturer and author of two books: “Yiddish for Dog and Cat Lovers,” in which she introduces the concept of a “Bark Mitzvah,”and “Are Yentas, Kibbitzers, & Tummelers Weapons of Mass Instruction?” Beginning with the evolution of courtroom drama in the 1980’s, Ms. Wolfe, a self-proclaimed “Yiddishist” who peppers her presentation with Yiddish expressions, traced the world of TV courtroom drama and Judge Judy in a breezy and engaging way. She cited Judge Joseph Wapner as the first judge of “The People’s Court.” A massive afternoon hit, the courtroom drama would spawn a host of similar shows seated in the judge’s chair by such as past NYC mayor, Ed Koch, and Judge Judy’s husband Judge Jerry Sheindlin. This paved the way for “the Big Momma of courtroom drama,” Judy herself. Airing her first episode in September 1996, Judge Judy came to the program with great experience as a family court judge, hearing more than 20,000 cases. Ms. Wolfe went on to say that Judy’s viewership has built up to 10 million people daily, all tuning in to hear this brassy, sassy lady abusing, judging, humoring, and most of all, successfully providing the drama that viewers want and appreciate. Her show is repeated throughout the day to give viewers multiple access to her wit and wisdom. Judge Judy’s toughness comes naturally to her. Growing up in the Sheepshead Bay area of Brooklyn, she attended James Madison High School, college, and in law school— the only female in her class. Her father, a dentist, had a strong sense of humor, which he passed on to his daughter. Judy described her mother as “a meat and potatoes” woman, passing along the ability to cut through nonsense and get right to the point. Judy went on to family court, and through her own ambition, became a presiding judge on the daytime TV program. Claims, disputes, and multiple areas of delinquencies are all in her domain. Ms. Wolfe cited a case where Judy’s classic style came into play. In presiding over a case with a poorly dressed young male defendant, she called him a “punk in Reeboks,” going on to say, “I’m going to send you so far upstate, your mother will need a passport to visit you.” The audience loved it. Judy’s zingers, emanating from her father, helped shape her persona. He once told her, “Beauty fades, but dumb is forever.” Judy is anything but dumb. After being divorced twice, she remarried her second husband and they now live the lifestyle of the rich and famous with a 36,000-square-foot home in Greenwich, Connecticut; an apartment in Manhattan; and a home in Florida. She has a contract for her show for several more years, and was a fitting role model for the NST Women’s Club program. NOW...
