The Diocese of Brooklyn
announced the creation
of a new Catholic
School - Bay Ridge Catholic
Academy, which will
serve students from nursery
through grades 8.
The school will open
this Fall, and will emphasize
faith, arts, and engineering
design thinking.
These are the skills that
students need to succeed
in the 21st Century workforce.
“Creating Bay Ridge
Catholic is a proud moment
for the Diocese,”
said Diocese District Superintendent,
Roxanna
Elder. “We think that the
focus on engineering and
the arts reaches the standards
our current and future
students deserve.”
Studies show that students
who participate in
the arts are more likely
to be recognized for their
academic achievement.
Their skills improve in
the following ways:
– the arts
allow children to express
themselves and enhance
their love for learning.
-
– the skills students
learn through the
arts are transferred to
other areas such as math
and science and language
arts by enhancing visual,
auditory, fine and gross
motor skills.
– Participating
in such activities
builds confidence.
In addition to the study
of arts, there will be Science,
Technology, Engineering,
and Mathematics
Labs, an urban garden,
and a foreign language
teacher. Engineering focuses
on the thought process,
a life-long skill that
is taught as young as kindergarten.
Religion is a primary
subject, as it is in every
academy in the diocese.
Bay Ridge Catholic will
offer a strong focus on
faith that is integrated
throughout the curriculum
and the school’s cultur
eA
fter-school programs
and before-school programs
will be available at
additional cost. Likewise,
a summer camp program
is in the works.
Catholic schools
around the country have
been facing declining enrollment
and difficult financial
situations, and
the Diocese of Brooklyn is
no exception.
Rather than simply closing
more Catholic schools,
the Diocese decided to embark
upon a new model to
serve the Bay Ridge community.
Bay Ridge Catholic
was created through
the merger of St. Anselm
and Holy Angels academies.
Bay Ridge Catholic will
be located at the current
St. Anselm building. The
interior of the building
will receive upgrades, and
the curriculum will be redesigned
from the ground
up.
The Diocese has
reached out to the area
residents for their input
into what they would like
to see the school offer.
Various committees of
interested families have
been formed. Parents
with a desire and interest
in serving on these committees
will have the opportunity
to participate
in the planning and transition
process, sharing insight
and ideas.
Further details about
the school will be released
in coming months.
