“Over the ten years I have worked
at NYSCAS, I’ve gotten to guide
each student I’ve interacted with on
a personal level, seeing them thrive
as they fulfill their goals,” says Belkis
Moquete-Defex, Assistant Director
of Recruiting.
Belkis understands the needs of
the students on a deeply personal
level, because just a decade ago she
used to be a NYSCAS student herself.
“While I was a student, I enrolled
in the Federal Work Study
Program, during which I worked
at the registrar’s office,” she explains.
“It’s no surprise that I’m so
invested in the school and the success
of our students.”
“I remember one story in particular,”
she recalls. “A student
re-enrolled after taking a twoyear
hiatus due to personal issues.
She said she wanted to go back to
school and reclaim her life, but she
was concerned about succeeding
in her classes while maintaining
her responsibilities as a single parent
with two children.”
Belkis put her mind at ease and
told her about the free tutoring
available to all NYSCAS students.
“I told her that if she ever had any
questions or concerns, the door to
my office would always be open,
and she could come in anytime.
Now she is two semesters away
from graduating, and she is very

excited. It’s a priceless feeling for
me to see her pursue her academic
goals, and to know that I was able
to guide her through this process.”

be for its students. “A majority of
our students receive financial aid
each year,” Belkis says. “We offer
free tutoring in virtually all
subjects, and our academic counselors
are always there to help the
students pick the right major and
the right classes for them.”

straight out of high school, others,
driven by the desire to pursue a
