When he was 16 years
old, Gary M. Williams read
the historical novel, Gone
With The Wind - and said
he wanted to write a book
just like it.
Years later, inspired by
a trip to Newport, Rhode
Island that his wife had
planned for their 10th wedding
anniversary, he began
writing his own piece of
historical fiction - the book,
Gone But Not Forgotten. It
has now been published
by Austin Macauley Publishers,
and is available on
Amazon and at Barnes and
Nobles.
It took him two years to
write the book, and 18 years
to find a publisher. Such is
the life of a writer. In that
span of time, Williams
toiled as Principal of an
elementary school for the
Department of Education,
retiring after a 25-year career,
and he now serves as
the current Principal of the
Bay Ridge Catholic Academy.
Gone But Not Forgotten
is an historical fiction
novel that begins at an outdoor
wedding in Newport,
with heroine twin sisters,
Veda and Rose Champion.
Veda is the spoiled American
debutante with an iron
will. Rose is the gentler
beauty who is passively
strong. Hans Wagner,
the male protagonist, is a
German immigrant who
comes to America to live
his dream. His best Jewish
friend, Rudolph Stern,
also from Germany, studies
medicine. But the toils
of the Great War halt the
hopes of both while ushering
in a series of tragedies
for the Champion family.
Set in America and Europe
from 1914 – 1918, Gone
But Not Forgotten chronicles
the tale of the Gilded
Age of pageantry through
the end of the Great War.
It is an epic saga of the
lives, trials, and tribulations
of the Champions, the
Wagners, and the Sterns.
It includes the sinking of
the Lusitania, the death of
the twins’ brother, Marius
Champion, and the vicious
murder of their grandparents
in Verdon.
The book is the first of a
trilogy.
His second book, Gone
But Not Forsaken, opens
with the pandemic of 1918,
a topic about which Williams
wrote, long before
2020 arrived.
The novel covers the
time period from 1918-1945,
chronicling The Great Depression,
World War II, the
age of Hollywood, and rise
of Nazi-ism.
The last of the trilogy
- Gone But Not Betrayed -
takes place from 1945-2000,
taking the reader through
topics that include life post-
World War II, the birth of
Israel, and the Vietnam
War.
The novels are unique,
says Williams, as there are
no historical fiction books
that chronicle the entire
20th century.
The Staten Island native,
now residing in Manhattan,
is busy working
on a new novel and a children’s
book.
Gone But Not Forgotten
by Gary M. Williams is
available on Amazon and at
Barnes and Nobles.
