CBD OIL
CALMING FIDO’S FEARS BY ALLISON MATOS
While CBD oil may seem like a relatively
new trend, hemp, from which CBD is
derived, is known as the world’s oldest
fiber, used in weavings 10,000 years ago.
Several years ago, Israeli scientist Raphael
Mechoulam, Ph.D., discovered the
effect of cannabidiol as it interacts with
the human body’s endocannabinoid
system. According to a 2013 review
published in the British Journal of Clinical
Pharmacology, studies have found
that the chemical compound has been
known to treat psychosis, anxiety and
depression disorders; suppress seizure
activity; reduce nausea and vomiting;
and combat inflammation, among other
ailments. Humans are now realizing the
positive effects CBD has on animals.
“There was a time when I was spending
$400 a month on opioids to keep my senior
miniature pinscher’s ailments under
control,” says Craig Zaffe, founder of
CBD Oils of Long Island, who’s seen the
benefits firsthand. “Side effects included
dementia and blindness. To prolong
her life, I tried CBD oil and in just 2 1⁄2
weeks she was off all medications and
her quality of life improved immensely.
She went back to being a puppy at the
ripe old age of 14.”
Much like humans, animals cannot tolerate
THC, the chemical that gives hemp
its psychoactive properties. This makes
CBD an excellent alternative to medical
marijuana, providing the same benefits
without the high.
Due to the lack of regulatory approval
of CBD in animals, many veterinarians
are often leery of suggesting CBD as a
treatment. But other vets across the
globe are reporting treatment success
for all types of animals,
from elephants suffering from
depression after losing a mate,
to cats with arthritis and dogs
with Fourth of July anxiety.
“One of the most common products
on the market for pets is a
tincture (dropper),” says Zaffe, noting
that CBD products are purchased without
a prescription. “Dosing goes by the
size of the animal, therefore, you should
always check with your veterinarian
before starting your pet on any CBD
product.”
Zaffe adds that pet parents should educate
themselves before making any CBD
purchase.
“Now that CBD oil has become mainstream,
there are many companies selling

poor-quality products,” he says. “As an
organic landscaper since 1973 with a
passion for holistic healthcare management,
I started my own company in
2016 to ensure I am providing the best
hemp-based products on the market.
Read websites and ask questions. At a
minimum, be sure any CBD product you
purchase is third-party tested and 100
percent organic.”
