COVER FEATURE
PHILANTHROPIST, TV HOST, ACTIVIST, AND AUTHOR
in New York City.
Shafiroff says that while we see
everything opening up now, a lot of
people have lost jobs and may still
be on food pantry lines. But charities
are opening up and having
fundraiser parties, mostly outside
or under a tent.
“You have to always be positive
and must make people feel good
about who they are, especially
right now. We have just gone
through one of the most difficult
times in history,” she says. “Tens
of millions of people were out
of work and people did not have
food for their families. It was a
horrific time for many people.
Now is the time for us all to unite
and to work together to make
life easier for all those who have
suffered far too much. We must
remain positive. We must work
hard to support those who have
had the most difficult time — we
must help them move forward.”
She maintains that supporting
our healthcare system is crucial,
and postpandemic volunteers
and funding are needed more
than ever, because many people
are now living at the poverty
level after being out of work. Her
focus is on food insecurity, mental
health issues, racial injustice
for all communities, and justice
for the LGBTQ community.
Saying that people need to believe
in themselves and their
worth, and get involved and
make an impact, she sees us
coming together as a world. And
while she sees this as a time when
there is still a lot of need, she says
it is also a tremendous time for
prosperity and hopefulness.
“I’m very hopeful for the future,”
she adds. “Philanthropy is coming
back stronger than ever.”
