In this issue, we profile Jenny Foley, a Long Island City resident who turned her love of animals and the outdoors into a fulltime job. Foley created Long Island City Dog Walk in 2012 and her team has been walking dogs and capturing their journeys around the neighborhood on Instagram ever since. She worked in home product sales out of college and after she was laid off, she decided to start her own business. Long Island City may be the next biotechnology hub with a new life sciences campus. Mayor Bill de Blasio announced a new initiative, LifeSci NYC, where he will pour $500 million into creating about 16,000 new jobs. Also in this issue, an Astoria music producer talks about his new album. Ras Beats collaborated with several rappers to create “Control Your Own,” a 14-track LP. The longtime Astoria resident manipulates existing beats for his debut album. We also spoke to Michael Rodas, an Astoria cab driver who posed for the 2017 NYC Taxi Drivers Calendar. Rodas was born and bred in Astoria and his father’s time as a New York City cab driver was part of the reason why he ultimately chose that career path. He shows some skin as Mr. October and proceeds from the calendar will go to University Settlement, America’s oldest settlement house.
