“A Piece of Yourself: Gift Giving in Self-Taught Art”
On view through Dec. 31, 2019
This exhibit features works created between the late
eighteenth and twenty-first centuries that explores
how American gift-giving practices are interconnected
with self-taught art. Curated by Assistant Curator
Steffi Ibis Duarte, “A Piece of Yourself: Gift Giving in
Self-Taught Art” features six works that speak to the
self-taught nature of each piece while highlighting
the expression of each maker’s views. The exhibit
also complicates traditional gift giving by “presenting
a one-of-a-kind artwork instead of an everyday
commodity.”

“École du soir (The Evening Academy)”
On view through Dec. 16, 2019
“École du soir” which translates to “the evening
academy” in English, is a project by artist Christian
Nyampeta, which centers around the idea of an
evening school. Nyampeta’s project consists of a place
for writing, known as a scriptorium, an exhibition and
public programs centered around “thinking Africa”
in the past and present. The artist was inspired
by Senegalese writer and film director Sembène
Ousmane, who saw cinema as “evening classes” or
“cours du soir.”
