To celebrate a great summer, we have an issue packed with great stories. In this issue, you’ll meet a toymaker based in Long Island City. Ken Como has worked as a furniture draftsman for years before starting his own business. His handmade, wooden toys are sold in high-end furniture and design stores around the world. Como makes each toy by himself in a Long Island City studio. He’s one of the many artists and craftspeople that gives the neighborhood its character. We also have an issue filled with the latest real estate news. Residential real estate trends and the latest developments being purchased and renovated in Long Island City are just some of the topics covered in this month’s issue. Our real estate columnist David Dynak also has an interesting solution to the lack of commercial development and glut of residential development in the neighborhood. Sofar Sounds, a global organization that puts on secret music shows around the world, has just expanded to Long Island City. They put on shows in unexpected places such as clothing stores, churches, people’s backyards and studios. We profiled the company and have some photos from the first ever Queens show. The MTA recently announced a complete overhaul of subway trains and stations that will start taking place in 2017. Astoria will see these renovations along several stations on the R line. Open cars, wider doors, Wi-Fi and charging stations are just some of the features included in the new subway cars unveiled by Governor Andrew Cuomo last month. We have the renderings so you can get a closer look at the changes. Three Astoria residents have put their filmmaking skills to service the Astoria community by profiling long-time businesses. James Ogle, Kevin Provost and Dan Connell payed homage to Broadway Silk Store, a fabric store that has been in the neighborhood since the 1930s. They plan on making this a reoccuring series to educate the neighborhood about the history of Astoria’s businesses. We hope you’ve had a great summer and if you have any tips, please feel free to email [email protected]
