SELFIE MODE
I went to the 5th Avenue Easter Day Parade last week. This is something that I've
been doing for the last 10 years. When I started photographing this annual event,
there were three distinct types of people in the crowd.
There were the parade participants, all wearing their most imaginative Easter
bonnets and outfits. Then there was the general public, who came to see the
participants parade down 5th Avenue.
And finally, there was us, a small number of photographers, who went around
taking pictures with their heavy 35mm cameras strapped around their necks.
Everybody kinda knew their place and the role they played in the dynamics of the
street.
After 2014, I saw a change in this dynamic. More and more people had
smartphones. In turn the line between participants and the public became less
defined, as both groups -- as well as the photographers -- were actively
taking pictures.
This recent parade was a capitulation of the increasing transformation
I've been seeing every year. It was now a quagmire of people randomly
taking pictures of each other with no rhyme or reason.
